The Future Looks Bright For The Silver And Blue

This is in response to a comment to the blog I posted yesterday. I was going to post it as a comment, but thought I’d share it with a larger audience instead. Here goes…

It’s OK to disagree. We all have the same goal and that is to see the Cowboys build a dynasty.

Dynasties are not built on a year-to-year strategy. They are built on a strategy that employs long term success based on moves that address not only the current needs but future ones as well.

You mentioned that the Cowboys needed an offensive playmaker and I remind you that the Cowboys had one of the best scoring teams in the NFC and certainly the best in their division.

Our collapse last year was on defense, NOT offense.

The Cowboys needed to shore that defense up and they made a major stride in doing that on Draft Day.

We have got ourselves a big playmaker on defense. If you love DeMarcus Ware, then wait until you see Anthony Spencer!

With regard to the 1st round pick in 2008, how will you feel if Cleveland does so bad they finish with a top 5 pick?

Are you saying this was not a great move by the Cowboys?

Believe me Cowboy fans, Jerry Jones is as shrewd a business man as there is in this world.

He built an empire by ensuring that his future would be better than the present.

That’s the way it works in sports as well.

The Cowboys are not looking for a one night stand in 2007. They are looking to reclaim the dynasty that we lost when we started playing from year to year and running in that same old threadmill.

We now have a strategy that will keep this franchise competitive for years to come.

It is built on young stars like Marion Barber (who was acquired in a similar Draft Day trade), Julius Jones, DeMarcus Ware, Bobby Carpenter, Tony Romo and others.

Our future is bright now and will be even brighter in the years to come!

I hope that the 5 people who read this blog will comment on it and let me know what you think!

You make excellent points. Jerry Jones knows exactly what hes doing. And you are right, a dynasty doesn’t happen overnight. We have the makings of another one and I think all the right calls were made this weekend.
Yeah, Brady Quinn is a great quarterback, but we already have one! Sometimes those great college players aren’t so great in the NFL. We’ve seen what Romo can do, and I trust that he’s gonna be our man for years to come!

Yes, they will have that 1st round pick next year, and who knows it can be a top 10; or even a top 5 pick, but what happens if Romo doesn’t come through…. What if Romo was a 5 week wonder and we go through the same in years to come trying to find that francise QB…… I just hope for every COWBOY fan that doesn’t happen, and Quinn totally sucks next year and years to come, because that might come back in bite us in the ass….. Just has you are a huge COWBOY fan, I am as well too, so i hope that you are right, and i am wroung on this……

Some Cowboys fans are crazy!! Brady Quin??? Are you serious?? We don’t need a QB!! We don’t need a WR!! We Don’t need a RB!! We are loaded on offense! I loved our draft picks! How many times did the Eagles blitz last season? Well now we have more protection along side Leanard Davis! What happend when we lost Greg Ellis last season? We lost all our pass rush! Now we have a great DE and Greg Ellis back. He may not be back at full speed but hey thats what our new DE is for! Last but not least! The best thing the Cowboys did was trade for the Browns first pick next year!! I don’t care if they drafted Joe Montana!! That team is lousy and we will have a top 5 pick next year!

It’s all cool Michael. I dont expect Romo to collapse, I expect him to shine.
Quinn wasn’t the best QB in the draft anyway, next year if God forbide we need one, we have two picks in the first round.
We can trade both of them for number one overall.
2 QB’s like Quinn and Romo would have led to a deep division in the ranks. We dont need anymore distractions.

I agree that the Cowboys need to improve on defense. The team needed another pass rusher. Even with Greg Ellis I didn’t believe it was a great pass rushing team. We need to find DeMarcus Ware’s equal at the other end. However, I’m not so sure I would of traded up to get Anthony Spencer. Only time will tell if he was worth it. Overall getting Cleveland’s 1st round next year made it a good day in the draft. As for Tony Romo I have faith in him that he can do the job. All you got to do is give him better protection & he can do a lot of damage to opposing teams.

I am very excited about this draft. I can respect differences of opinions but I just don’t get the disappointment in some.
Wade Phillips was brought in because our defense lost steam last year. Bill’s bend-but-don’t break 3-4 is a thing of the past, and Dallas will finally begin dictating to offenses.
Yes the secondary was a concern but not the major problem- it’s the pass rush. Phillips brings an attack-style 3-4. Heat will come, from somewhere, on every play. Teams that do it like that, they can’t afford to lose a third of the playbook when guys get tired. We need an arsenal of versatile, front seven defenders.
Think of a nickel package next year when, perhaps, we move Spears and Canty in to tackle, put Ware and Spencer with their hands down, then have Bobby Carpenter and Roy Boy firing.
I like the sounds of that. I like pass rushers. I like having a TON of them. You can either cover four guys, or kill one – which is more efficient? The answer is getting to the QB, not defending the pass.
I really like both tackles. Both are versatile guys who can fill in anywhere immediately while they are being groomed for better things. The Free kid has been very loud in the Midwest – he absolutely crushes people at Northern Iowa. He’ll need to get bigger, but, he’s the right kind of kid.
I don’t understanding picking the QB from Washington. Seems like a bit of a look-at-how-smart-I-am pick. It’s a boom-or-bust, and I’m not such a big fan of the Boom or busts. But, if this kid can come in and return some kicks, that would be great – I don’t like having TNew drop back there.
I think we had a big day. And here’s the most important aspect – next year, in the draft, we’re ready to take the next triplet – whoever that turns out to be.
Next year, we go for the big headline. This year, we toe the line. Add depth. Give Wade a chance to settle in. Give us a year to see how T.O. handles things.
Then, next year, we throw the big Bomb.
