There's Plenty Of Blame To Go Around After The 44-6 Trouncing

The Cowboys have not won a season finale on the road since Sony first introduced Playstation back in 1995.

The Cowboys haven’t won a playoff game since Cuba Gooding Jr. won Best Supporting Actor for Jerry Maguire back in1996.

The Cowboys last won a season finale back when the world was worrying about the Y2K bug and bracing for the millennium, in 1999.

Do you see a pattern?

Incidentally, the Cowboys have had over a half dozen quarterbacks in that span, and a few head coaches, but only one owner.

This season, the Cowboys lost to three playoffs teams when they were defeated by the Steelers, Ravens and Eagles.

The Eagles played like a team that desperately wanted to win on Sunday when they trounced the Cowboys 44-6. They came to play.

The Cowboys on the other hand, looked tired, lazy, unmotivated and unprepared for the task at hand. The game was basically over at halftime. The only reason we continued to watch was to see if the Cowboys had any fight in them… they didn’t.

Tony Romo looked clueless once again in a big spot and failed to deliver… AGAIN!

He is running out of excuses.

Marion Barber may not be as tough as we all thought he was. In 2006 and 2007, Barber fumbled just once in a two year span, and averaged 4.8 yards per carry. He only averaged 3.4 yards this season and fumbled the ball an abysmal seven times. Bill Parcells always said Barber was not an everyday type running back… he was right.

The offensive line has shown itself to be woefully inadequate. Even before Kyle Kosier went down with an injury, the O-line had major problems against the blitz.

Pacman Jones turned out to be the missing ingredient in this entire epic collapse. Jerry Jones was warned against signing Pacman, but he ignored the obvious and in doing so he completely upset the chemistry in the lockerroom… A chemistry that was already showing some cracks.

Roy Williams not only cost the Cowboys big dollars and valuable draft picks, he contributed very little if anything to the team since joining the Cowboys after the trade deadline.

You can’t blame Romo or Phillips for Pacman and Williams…

Ahh yes… That brings us to Wade Phillips… The mouse that wouldn’t roar…

Every playoff caliber team has at least one vocal and inspirational leader on their team. Someone who can rally the team when the chips are down, and someone who can snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat.

Who are those leaders on this team? Can you see them, because I sure as hell can’t…

We have the soft spoken, good humored quarterback with the matinée idol looks and the hot celebrity girlfriend in Tony Romo, who has choked for three straight season ending games.

We have a head coach who always has a confused look on his face, and during Sunday’s collapse he was over-ruled by his quarterback on a 4th down play, which left the team dazed and confused in a must win game.

How can this team go forward without any real visible leadership?

You have T.O. running his mouth now and then, but that’s not leadership.

We have a few defensive gems in Ware, James and Ratliff, but how can they possibly lead on offense?

There are so many questions, and chief among them are these two…

1. Has Jerry Jones been the biggest obstacle with his philosophy of trying to create a team built around big names and celebrities, rather than players with a solid work ethic and a capacity for stepping up when it matters most?

2. Do we blow this whole team up after two failed seasons, and keep the serviceable players, but basically overhaul most of the roster, the head coach, and the coaching staff?

Obviously, most of the players will return, but do you support Jones’ decision to keep the coaching staff intact for next season?

It looks like we have just begun an offseason that will be filled with more questions than answers.

I cant argue with anything you said Joe. You are absolutely right on every point. I miss the orginal Cowboy Roy Williams and Sam Hurd, and our pro bowl punter, and would’ve been rookie of the year. But even with those guys out we should have had the talent to take us all the way. We just didn’t have the heart and soul to get us there.
COWBOYS 4 LIFE! Lets break in the new stadium with a new outlook -> Welcome 2009!

THERE IS ONE MORE PERSON THAT HAS BEEN THERE SINCE 2000 AND THAT PERSON IS JOE JURESICK THEIR WEIGHT TRAINER.

To answer your questions Joe, here’s my 2 cents
    Question 1:
I heard a quote last night after the game that made alot of sense to me, the Dallas Cowboys are a “brand” more so than a “franchise”. Jerry Jones has done a great job of creating the “brand”. And for the most part I’ve respected his business decisions regarding the team as a whole. (Although I think not picking up a reliable backup QB was not the best judgement call!!) On paper it seems like we’ve got the best team that money can buy, but something is GREATLY lacking…and that brings me to your second question….
    Question 2:
Why in the world would JJ stand behind a coaching staff that between last year and this year seems to have brought this team to it’s knees? I do feel like we need to make major changes starting at the top. I can’t really throw any of the individual players under the bus, because the majority of them have genuine talent. What they’re missing is LEADERSHIP!! We need to stop all of this “ME” crap and work as a team, and somebody needs to take control and be a true and stern leader. The Camp Cupcake era needs to end ASAP!!

The problem with the Cowboys starts at the top Jerry Jones. He needs to just be the owner and stop being the G.M and Head coach. Until Jerry gets a real G.M and lets his H.C actually coach the Cowboys won’t win a superbowl.
I like wade but he needs to step down and be a D.C. he has never won a playoff game.
I like Romo but he just folds under pressure. He can’t win the big game. It goes back to his college days.
    I hope I am worng.
Cowboys + Jimmy Johnson= Superbowl wins.

I have to agree with everybody and their posts. Taking a quote from “The Replacements”in saying that “we need heart…miles and miles of heart.” That is what we missed in getting us to where we need to be. I do agree that we need a motivational figure as our top dog and have, and always will, argue that they should’ve looked no farther than Joe Avezzano to step in and take the head coaching job. One, he knows the Dallas chemistry better than anybody and two, he doesn’t take s**t from any of his players. I am quite sure Bill Bates would back me up on this. We also need to quit going after “troubled” players that JJ is known to do. Some have worked out really well, but not all.
Now on to the QB position, YES, we need a solid backup (preferably under the age of drawing social security checks) for Romo. If I were JJ, I would really try to acquire a 1st round pick to land someone like Bradford in the draft, assuming he leaves OU. I hate OU with a passion(hook ‘em) but you can clearly see the same in Sam Bradford that we all saw with Troy Aikman. Clearly, he is the most accurate, focused, determined and deadliest QB in college football. Damn it hurt to say that, but it’s true. Next I would give depth to the O-Line. You can’t tell me that JJ can’t find some beef to help out Leonard Davis who would help keep our QB from getting his ass planted in the turf. WE don’t need any more weapons on offense. We have the most outstanding receiving corps any team could ask for, 2 badass tight ends and 3 Sherman Tanks for running backs. We need the o-line to make the holes for them and the QB to air the ball to the outer targets. Look what Joe Flacco has done his rookie season with the Ravens and Big Ben with the Steelers. It can be done.
Defense, mainly secondary, has killed us in the deep game. I still say Randy White would be the most badass choice for our Def. Coordinator. Once again, he is someone who knows the Cowboys inside and out and a great motivator. JJ can’t say that he is broke after building the new stadium, I don’t buy it(no pun intended.) He bought Pepsi and Deion Sanders at the same time, so he can get us what we need if he really wants to .I apologize for my 2 cents worth turning into $1.50, I am just very disappointed along with you guys and gals.

My heart can’t take it anymore. The Cowboys’ problem is so obvious, but so sad that the problem will never go away. You can’t fire the owner. And you can’t tell him what to do. The only thing that can be done is to not buy his product. Boycott the bastard.

Yu Guys….. Stop Blaming Tony For Everything…. He’s An Awesome QB And An Awesome Athlete… Yu Guys Remember Peyton Manning Was In Tha Same Situation Tony Is Rite Now… He Didn’t Win Tha BIG Game Til His 7th Season…. Romo Will Be Ok… Nd This Team Will Be Okay… Have Faith Cowboy Fans… TRUE BLUE ALL THA WAY!!

You make some very valid points Joe. Personally I don’t care about how many season fianles we’ve lost in a row or when our last playoff when was. Those things have nothing to do with the 2008 Cowboys. That’s crap that ESPN and NFL Network use to try to convince people of “trends” in the NFL.
Football does require leadership. Your opinion on that is spot-on. I personally think that a team has two “basic” leaders. The head coach and the QB. Now I know the defense has it’s own leaders and this team has them just as you stated. But our coach and our QB do not have what it takes. That puts us in a damn tight spot. You can those two and you’re looking at rebuilding. This team is too close to rebuild. Yet, we all know in our hearts what the problem is. Nobody wants to say that Romo isn’t the guy. But I’ll say it. ROMO ISN’T THE GUY! At one point I called him the second coming of Danny White. I was wrong. Danny White was better.
I can’t pretend to know the answers but I can tell you names that are NOT the answer. Romo,Roy Williams(BOTH),Wade Phillips, Pacman Jones. I’m sure I left someone out.

I Knew the ‘Boys had it coming but, I NEVER thought they would pull a ’49er’ and Drop’em and Spread’em for McNab & Co. it was like they couldn’t wait to get screwed – It was AWFUL!

  10. CAT aka Get T.O. the Damn Ball!

we need a coach that can take control of this team,,,too many huge personalities for such a timid guy…….
    i want jimmy johnson back.
    now.
    lol.
but seriously,,,t.o. did try to be a leader but he just gets ripped for everything he says.
listen to what he’s said all year…he’s right.

Great post. The one thing that hit dawned on me most yesterday is that Romo is not a big time quarterback. Not only yesterday but the past 4 games have shown me he is just not that good. Hopefully I am dead wrong. Hopefully he was more hurt than he has let on. Second point, not to second guess because I didnt like the trade at the time, but why roy williams. The way whitten plays this team does not need a 2nd superstar wr. Not that I like Crayton, in fact I still blame him for the Giants loss last year, but he was adequate. You paid this guy and gave up all those draft picks for this? Changes have to be made. And I would start with a solid veteran QB..a jeff garcia if he is cut, someone like that.

I do want to say I don’t agree with Tony Romo being a bad player because he is not. I am stating we need a solid backup for him in the event of injuries that plagued him this year. But he and Wade really need to step up and TAKE leadership whether the other players are for it or not. I will always love the Cowboys and will never abandon them as a fan. I hope I didn’t come off that way. If I did, I apologize to them and you, my fellow Cowboy fans. I am just hurt like the rest of you. Our star WILL shine bright again one day, and that day isn’t very far off.
