Get DeMarcus Ware Elected As Top Defensive Player

When the NFL announced that Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison was named AP Defensive Player of the Year, it froze me for a second.

As the NFL season drew to an end, I had seen enough of DeMarcus Ware to believe he would be the hands down favorite for Defensive Player of the Year. The fact that he chased Michael Strahan for the single season sack record would be the clincher I figured.

I decided to take a closer look and compare the two of them head to head.

Player G Total Solo Ast Sck FF PDef Int
James Harrison 15 101 67 34 16 7 3 1
DeMarcus Ware 16 84 69 15 20 6 2

It looks like they both had solid seasons in 2008, with Ware leading in sacks, and Harrison leading in tackles.

Since 2005, DeMarcus Ware has more sacks than any player in the game. His total of 20 sacks this season was the second highest season total of all time. His six forced fumbles were the most in team history.

While DeMarcus Ware stood head and shoulders above the rest of the defensive unit, Harrison was just one of several outstanding defensive players on his team. Pittsburgh’s defense was number one in total defense, pass defense and points allowed.

The voting placed Ware is second place as Harrison earned 22 votes to 13 for Ware among 50 of the nations sportswriters.

DeMarcus Ware still has a shot at the other Defensive Player of the Year award,
