Jerry Jones Needs to Learn When to "Just Say No"

To begin with, let me just say that I love the Dallas Cowboys. I have an incredible passion for this team, it’s so much more to me than a game or money or fame. Some of my favorite moments in life have been spent watching the Cowboys with friends and family.

With that said, I am very disappointed in this organization. I have heard for years from the media and ‘haters’ how Jerry Jones is a sellout and would do anything for the money.

The latest headlines may have proven that point. Reality shows? Seriously?

Michael Irvin is producing a reality show similar to “Survivor” or “American Idol”. Terrell Owens has announced his reality show as well, that sounds similar to “The Bachelor” or “Rock of Love”. (Of course, I’m no reality show fanatic so don’t quote me on those comparisons.)

Irvin and Owens aren’t the first Cowboys to become stars on television. Emmitt Smith stole hearts (again) in 2006 when he went on “Dancing with the Stars” and took home the trophy. Deion Sanders has a reality show on Oxygen called “Primetime Love” that is filmed in his home with his family about their every day lives.

The difference is, Emmitt and Deion’s shows didn’t involve the current team. They weren’t exploiting the team or taking the focus away from the game.

We just came off a season of disappointments that started off as a reality show on HBO. Okay, I admit I loved Hard Knocks as much as the next Cowboys fan. I can’t lie, it was awesome to see what goes on in training camp and preseason. But did it help the team? Did the team live up to its potential?

stadium2.jpgThe Cowboys’ brand new billion dollar stadium will earn them more than enough attention this year. Do we really have to make a mockery of the game and be the center of attention every chance we get?

I think true Cowboys fans agree that the rest of the team (and management) could learn alot from the humility of Jason Witten, DeMarcus Ware and Marion Barber.

Oh and for the record, you can go ahead and call me a hypocrit because you know I will watch both new shows. But, unfortunately I’m not the owner or the general manager and the outcome of these decisions does not rest on my shoulders.

AMEN on your many points! It is time to focus on the basics, and be more humble.
At the same time, Muhammed Ali was far from humble and was the greatest of all time.
To each their own, and winning cures all, but I agree with you, now is not the time.
What’s next “Newlyweds 2 – Jessica and Tony” on MTV!?!?

  2. Cowboy Bill

Great piece Kelly. You would think that a humbling experience like the 2008 season would bring these guys back to some sort of reality to the direness of the situation.
By the way, how long before we hear about Martellus Bennett’s youtube channel MartyB TV on ESPN? It’s coming. You just know it’s coming.

I’m with ya sister. As if we need any more distractions as it is. This stuff makes me ill but I too will be glued to the tube when its on. Ugh. Damn you, Jerry! As for Marty B’s video, I love the guy on the field but man does he have some growing up to do. Don’t be surprised if he gets fined by sheriff Roger for his language on there. Kids don’t need that kind of thug influence. Geez, did I just say that? lol

  4. FOCUS PEOPLE, FOCUS!!
Now this is just my opinion, but there should be a rule that while you are under contract with this organization, you can’t do things like this… reality shows… what a joke! The focus, while under contract, should be the team and nothing but the team. Again, this is just my opinion and it’s obviously not shared by everyone, including Cowboys owners and management. Bummer!

Kelly, as always you are right on point and have your finger on the pulse of Cowboys Nation!
At a time when the Cowboys should be looking in the mirrors and being true to themselves, they continue to think everything is a big joke.
When will this team finally get their game faces on and be serious?
This team suffers from a lack of focus as Chris so plainly observed!

I don’t like it not one bit. They need to focus not be trashing us. I have never liked T.O. never, never, never. But i dealt with it cause i love the cowboys. But he needs to get over his self.

    I can’t wait…LOL!
