After getting snubbed earlier this week by not being selected AP’s Defensive Player of the Year, DeMarcus Ware has been awarded the Butkus Award. The award goes to the top linebacker in the nation at the high school, collegiate and pro levels.
The award initially was only given to the top linebacker in college, but was expanded this year to include high school and professional football. Therefore, Ware is the first pro player to ever receive the award.
Butkus Award is named after Hall of Fame Chicago Bear’s Dick Butkus and presented by the Butkus Foundation. The winner is selected by a panel of coaches, media and personnel who select the most complete linebacker in the game.
The Cowboys star linebacker was also named to the 2008 AP All-Pro team. DeMarcus Ware received the most votes with 45, and James Harrison of Pittsburgh was also selected coming in second with 38 votes.
Congratulations DeMarcus, its about time you get some recognition!
