It's The End Of An Era For Roy Williams

The writing appears to be on the wall for the one-time untouchable safety, Roy Williams. Several sources are now reporting that it’s not a matter of if Williams will be traded, but when.

The once beloved Cowboy, has fallen on hard times in recent seasons and has seen his stock fall considerably due to ineffectiveness and injuries.

A change of scenery now looks like the best thing for the player once known as Superman.

The Dallas Morning News made it as clear as day when they reported that Roy Williams has played his last game for the Cowboys.

According to their sources, the Cowboys’ front office has been calling around the league to determine the veteran safety’s trade value.

They even go as far as saying that if the Cowboys fail to find a trade partner, he will most assuredly be released.

It’s hard to believe how far the five-time Pro Bowler and former first-round pick from Oklahoma has fallen.

It’s always sad to see such a prominent star disintegrate the way that Williams has, but it just seemed like the game changed and ultimately passed him by. In another era, he may have gone down as one of the greatest players at his position, but the league has become too intent on minimizing the toughness and brutality that originally made football the game it is today.

Rule changes like the one that banned the horse-collar tackle spelled doom for Williams, and he never seemed able to adapt.

So now the Cowboys have chosen to adapt without him.

Thanks for the memories Roy…

  • I’ve been a harsh critic of Williams but I think this is a mistake. Sure he has issues in coverage but he has real value with this defense. Williams came into 2008 ready to step his game up and was plagued by injuries. There is no way anyone can say with any certainty that his tank has run dry. I think the man deserves one more year.

  • I don’t want him to leave, he’s my favorite Cowboy this past decade. It’s sad how quickly they turned against him, he came back to play a little with a broken forearm only to break his forearm AGAIN making a tackle. This guy is dedicated team player. Wherever he goes I’ll follow him to that team!

  • I think he should get one more year too. I know this is breaking his heart, and its just not fair. He was out all last year, who knows what the “new” Roy is capable of, dammit Jerry!

  • I’ve loved Roy since day one. I have his fathead in my kitchen. When I heard this news, I pondered Roy’s past days as a Cowboy and I’m gonna say something that will probably get a lot of people mad.
Even though I loved Roy’s crazy “highlight reel” hits, who else did I have to love on those 5-11 teams?…
OK…don’t send the lynch squad to Chicago just yet…Think about it…We love the star…We love the DALLAS COWBOYS…Did anyone here LOVE Pete Hunter?…How about Quincy Carter?…I could go on and on…
Roy’s best days as a pro were alongside Darren Woodson in the 3-4…
Darren’s days of covering up Roy’s lack of coverage skills are long gone…
You don’t become a better coverage safety by losing the pro-bowl safety opposite you, gaining weight, getting older and swithing defensive schemes that don’t cater to your strength…
I love ya Roy…Just not on this roster anymore…

  • I think the reason why Roy Williams has not been playing is because his D.C is not in Dallas anymore Mike Zimmer. He is the guy who Knows how to use Roy and brought the best out of him. If Wade can do what Mike did Roy will be back better than ever.
2006 was his last great hard hitting season.
Roy Williams was my first COWBOYS jersey #31.
You guys should checkout Roys Highlight Video on youTube it’s called Rou Williams “tear it up”.

  • This really tears me up! I love Roy. This is the part of football I don’t like. Feels like when Emmitt went to the Cards.
