A Few Pre Draft Day Thoughts

I thought I’d have a little fun today. Here are a couple of trades that I believe would really benefit the Cowboys going forward.

Trade Greg Ellis

Send our second round pick (51) and Greg Ellis to Cleveland for their second round pick (37)

The Cleveland Browns desperately need a 3-4 rush outside linebacker as Willie McGinest is 37 and Kamerion Wimbley so far could be called a bust. Trading down 14 spots in the second to gain Greg Ellis would be a no brainer for the Browns.

Trading to the top of the second round would virtually assure us of having our pick of any safety in the draft. It is imperative to get this pick right because this pick represents the future at safety for the Cowboys. My favorite at this position changes daily. (LOL)

Trade For Atlanta’s 2nd Round Pick

Send our third round pick (69) , 3 fifth round picks (1, 20 and 30) and a seventh (18) to Atlanta for their second round pick (55) and select Clint Sintim OLB from Virginia

Atlanta only trades down 14 spots to gain 4 additional picks. We move ahead of Miami in the second round and get our replacement for Greg Ellis

Our Remaining Draft Picks

We have one fourth, two comps at the end of the fifth, one sixth and one seventh round pick left to play with.

We can use these picks to add depth at corner, o-line, nose tackle (although I like Junior Siavaii) and MAYBE a WR and QB

With our 5th round comp picks I like:

Louis Vasquez, OG, Texas Tech – Height: 6-5. Weight: 333.

Domonique Johnson, CB, Jackson State – Height: 6-1. Weight: 197.

Actual selection numbers for Rounds 4-7 will be determined when the compensatory selections have been announced.

Trade values were determined using the NFL Draft Value Chart

Still think we need to draft a safety finally, but what do you think about signing free agent SS James Butler, formerly of the Giants? Heard from a friend who works at Valley Ranch that he is coming in for a look this week. He is 6’3″, good stats for mid career player, and has experience playing in NFC East!

    Mike-
Butler is definately worth a sit down. If he would sign a little higher than 3rd year minimum (05 and 06 don’t count because of playing time) and earn a better contract, I’m all for it. Right now Ken Hamlin is the only safety I like on our roster. I think one of the others listed on the current depth chart will squeek through. Signing Butler and hanging on to Courtney Brown probably sets us up the best for drafting a strong safety with ball skills in the draft with our first pick.
If we got Sean Smith, Louis Delmas or Rashaad Johnson, I would want to move Hamlin to SS permanently. With these moves, a weakness would turn into a strength. We’ll see.
