Best Ever Dallas Cowboys
An article by Rob V.
Comments Off Last night I was watching the top ten Dallas Cowboys of all time on the NFL Network. Although I agree with most of the top ten, I did not agree with the order of some of them. For example they had Michael Irvin ranked higher than Emmitt Smith. Excuse me?? Emmitt was all-everything and should have been ranked higher.
So I started thinking about the best ever Cowboys. But instead of ranking them one through ten I thought about their positions. Who was the best at their positions? The Cowboys have played 49 seasons so that is a lot of players. My first thought was that this would be an easy list. Then I sat down and started writing and well, it was not that easy! I could have just listed players who I’ve seen since becoming a fan, but I wanted to go beyond that. So I went back in time to the 60′s and 70′s then worked my way up to right now. This is what I came up with and of course this is just my opinion and is open for discussion.
QB – Roger Staubach
RB – Emmitt Smith
FB – Darryl Johnston
TE – Jason Witten
WR – Michael Irvin
WR – Drew Pearson
C – John Fitzgerald
G – Nate Newton
G – Larry Allen
T – Eric Williams
T – Rayfield Wright
DE – Harvey Martin
DE – Ed (Too Tall) Jones
DT – Bob Lilly
DT – Randy White
LB – Lee Roy Jordan
LB – Chuck Howley
LB – DeMarcus Ware
S – Darren Woodson
S – Charlie Waters
CB – Mel Renfro
CB – Everson Walls
Once again, this was more difficult than I thought. I left many players off the list. We all know this is an organization full of stars. I’m sure some of you are wondering why I didn’t select other players like…
Troy Aikman
Tony Dorsett
Robert Newhouse
Jay Novacek and Doug Cosbie
Bob Hayes
Mark Stepnoski and Tom Rafferty
John Niland
Jethro Pugh
DD Lewis and Ken Norton
Cliff Harris
Terrence Newman, Dennis Thurman and Cornell Green
All great players, but I had to make a choice. I also did not include some players that put up some good numbers, but I didn’t consider true Cowboys like Charles Haley, Deion Sanders and Terrell Owens. I guess when it comes right down to it the Dallas Cowboys have the Star on their helmets for one reason…because all the players are Stars.

I used to make this same sort of list every year a new Madden Game would come out. One of my best friends and I would make an All-Cowboys best of roster. We even set up the team for a 52 man roster. I like the fact that you added John Niland. We would always put Pete Gent in as our last WR as well. Great article. It was an extremely fun read, and makes me want to go edit another All Dallas team!
Could you imagine a dual running back tandem of Emmit Smith and Tony Dorsett?

Top Lists are so hard, especially when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys. But you remember at the end of that show on NFL Network, the Giants radio guy said, “it must be really hard to have to pick whose the best out of Aikman and Staubach, Emmitt and Dorsett.” He was being sarcastic of course. But it is a nice problem to have lol.

I couldnt believe it either, you have to have Emmitt in number 1 or 2 spot…
