The Year Was 1996

Wow, it’s June already? My, how time flies. I love the month of June. Most importantly because it’s the month of my only child’s birthday, June 20. It’s also the first month of summer and no school. My son will be 13 this month and is currently on a bus on his way to church camp for the week. Now, I must mention it’s his first time away from home that long without a relative. He certainly is growing up and it’s going to be hard for me to accept that.

You must be wondering what this has to do with Cowboys football. Well, I came here to get my mind off of missing my child, and started wondering what were the Cowboys doing 13 years ago.

We started the year off wonderful. The Cowboys defeated the Steelers in Super Bowl XXX. Our beloved team became the first team to win 3 Super Bowls in 4 years to wrap up the 1995 football season. It doesn’t really get much better than that.

Later that fall the Cowboys began the season losing 3 of the first 4 games. After that, they pulled it together and ended the season 10-6. Emmitt Smith achieved a monumental goal by passing 10,000 yards on Thanksgiving Day. The Cowboys took the NFC East title for the fifth straight season and won their eighteenth division title after defeating the England Patriots. Sadly, Dallas lost to Carolina and weren’t able to return to the big stage.

The Cowboys did send an astonishing nine Pro Bowlers to Hawaii that year. I’m sure most of these names are familiar to you:

QB Troy Aikman , OG Larry Allen (starter), C Ray Donaldson, G Nate Newton, CB Deion Sanders (starter), LB Jim Schwantz, DE Tony Tolbert (starter), T Erik Williams (starter), S Darren Woodson.

1996 was the last great year of that amazing 90′s team. The following year the Cowboys had a disappointing 6-10 season, marking 1997 as the first year in that decade that the Cowboys missed the playoffs. 1998 was better, records were set, the Cowboys swept the NFC East, and they returned to the playoffs.

The Cowboys have yet to return to the Super Bowl since that big game of the ’95 season, which was played on January 28, 1996. I was about 5 months pregnant with my son at the time. And just like he will return from camp, the Cowboys will return to the big show. Of course it’s taking a lot longer than we like, every year we cheer them on and truly believe ‘this is the year’!

Our beloved ‘Boys will rise to the challenge once again and return the 6th trophy to their new home soon. I think the expectations of last year got the best of us. And while none of the media or analysts are predicting a Cowboys Super Bowl, we all know it’s coming.

This year would be nice. And maybe they can go two years in a row, I’m personally rooting for Super Bowl in 2010 when the Cowboys host the Super Bowl on my birthday February 6, 2011. I know – call me overly optimistic, I’m dreaming!

Dreams can come true. GO COWBOYS!

Ok, I have a confession to make. All the stuff the Cowboys have gone through since Super Bowl XXX is all my wife’s fault. Yes, I met my wife five days after we beat the Steelers. Look at all the success before I met her and look at everything after that. 1-6 in the playoffs. I’ve been looking into a seasonal separation. I’m so sorry to everyone. Of course I’m kidding…or am I.
