Attention! Attention! Roy Williams Is Not a Bust!

nfl_u_rwilliamsts_57611

I repeat: Roy Williams is not a bust!

Anyone who watched the Dallas Cowboys game on Sunday would see that Roy Williams is far from a bust, but rather an outstanding quality receiver.

He has not had a great year. He has 19 receptions for 324 yards and two touchdowns. He is the guy you don’t want on your fantasy team, but he is the guy I want on our Cowboys roster.

Passing is all about timing. If you don’t have it, you work on it and it takes time to get it right.

The Romo to Williams passing combination has not been as explosive as the Romo to Owens combination that just lit up the NFL for three years with 34 touchdowns.

However, it has just been a working progress that showed results to me last night.

Miles Austin was covered all night, and when that happened, Roy Williams had to step up and make plays to help win this critical ball game, and he did!

He had five catches for 75 yards and almost had a touchdown if he had not been interfered with by Asante Samuel, a penalty that was not called.

You hear how Roy Williams is all hype, no result, but that is far from the truth.

I know some of you who are reading this have had to have played wide receiver at some point in your life.

Those who have should know how hard it is to run the route just right and get in the position to where the quarterback can throw the ball at a angle, and your route intersects that angle at the exact point where you put your hands up to catch the ball and secure it before you get smashed into the turf by a tackler.

I played receiver at a lunchtime game during school, and only one quarterback that I really played with had a mutual sense of timing. From the day I walked onto the field and he (Sean) saw me open, he threw the ball exactly right and I made some amazing catches with him during those games.

We had such a trust that if I could find a soft spot in the coverage (which I did a lot) that he could zip that ball to me and I would catch it.

The other QBs did not either trust me because my hands were iffy at times, or they had a better rhythm with another guy.

I remember one of the other guys (Mario) said to me up front that he was not going throw it to me because I never had the reaction force to go up and fight for the ball in a tough spot.

He was a reckless passer, and I needed a quarterback who would place it where only my hands could get it.

Thanks for article. It helps us that haven’t played football. U put it on paper so I felt i was playing wide-out.

I feel like Roy and Tony are only going to grow and grow. Between Austin and Williams whew watch out.

  2. … these things take time lol

Its all about the weapons, we can control the field if we use them wisely and spread the love.

  3. Justin

……….. lol you have to be kidding me… this is what I’ve been saying when all the rest of you have been yelling “ITS TIME FOR A CHANGE” and to bench Williams!!! I’m not the “I told you so” type person but i will say it this time! I TOLD YA’LL SO!!!!!!!

    • Rob V.

Relax Justin. I’m guessing you are referring to me article. One game does not a season make. Yes, RW played well, but so did Crayton and Olgetree. Let’s hope he continues to grow, but I still stand by what I said that a great QB/WR combo does not grow over time. It just happens! Yes, RW will catch his passes, but so will the other receivers on the team.

Roy is a bust!! Thats why you and I and everyone else on here dont play in the NFL. Roy thinks he is a #1 reciever when he is more of a 2 than anything. 5 catches for 75 yards in the NFL doesnt make you a bust? The guy has started I believe 10 or 11 games for the Cowboys since he came here and Austin has started 4 and made a bigger impact. Romo was targeting Williams against Philly. Just like he targeted T.O. last year. If we would of lost at Philly the masses would of been crying of why Austin didnt get more passes thrown to. Austin runs better routes than Williams and has more speed. I would even venture to say that Austin is a better #1 than Williams ever was…wait a minute…the guy is a never has been. If yoy think 5 for 75 is a #1 reciever then you should be playing in the NFL…teams would jump at the chance to pay 8 million a year for that kind of production.

  5. Joe D.

The matter of whether Roy Williams is a bust can best be answered by the 2.5 million people that live in Detroit.

  6. Fredooch

Amen to that Joe…Amen to that.

  7. Full Metal Black

Romo and Roy aren’t there yet. its best if he just open up the offense by being another target..,,.,

  8. James Edwards

I know Roy had a big game but lets hold off on the whole not a bust thing just like with Austin it has to be consistant

But I love the production from Roy in Philly which opened up the big play to Austin

  9. Fredooch

Romo was forcing the ball to Roy. And I dont consider 5 for 75 having a big game….10 for 250…now thats a big game. The difference between Roy and Miles is 3 things….Austin runs better routes…is faster…and yeah is making about 8 million less than Roy. Roy is a descent reciever….he is like a better version of Alvin Harper….he sure aint no Michael Irvin. Austin has shown that he can dominate a game…..he dominated the chiefs and the Falcons….ROy has 9 more games on him…all he has dominated is 8 million dollars…great con-artist. Even Troy Aikman said it….This will go down as the biggest bust of Jerry Jones general manager career. They should of traded for Steve Smith or Anquain Boldin.

We don’t NEED someone to be a #1 receiver. Have have 4 number #2’s. This is not a bad thing. Remember that New England team that didn’t have any superstars at wideout and they won 3 Super Bowls that way? That’s how I see us. Guys who are stepping up when their number is called are just as important as He Who Shall Not Be Named.

So Roy didn’t have a HUGE game, but he had his best game as a Cowboy thus far. We’re going to need more games like that in the next couple months and hopefully beyond. He’s BIG and can box out most DBs with his body. He’ll do much better in coming games, especially as Miles continues to see double coverage.

  11. Tom

And Fredooch, Troy didn’t say that. He said if he doesn’t produce what JJ thinks he can, then it will be seen as a bust. The jury is still out.

  12. Fredooch

“If Roy Williams doesn’t turn out to be the player they thought he would be when they made the trade, I think this would be one of the biggest busts in the history of the league.” Thats what Aikman said…and ur right..I was wrong….Its in the history of the league. You need to put up on a consistent basis at least a few 1 yard games. You dont pay a guy 8 million a year to catch 5 passes for 75 yards. And this guy isnt a rookie for god’s sake. You guys make it seem like we just drafted some wet nosed guy out of college. When T.O. got here he immediately produced. When Keyshawn got here he produced. Stop making excuses for a guy that we basically overpaid for and wasnt that good to begin with. Anybody remember Marcellus Wiley a few years ago. He even stated that he was shocked that Jerry Jones gave him all that money knowing full well he wasnt that good. LOL….

  13. Fredooch

    I meant to say 100 yard games…lol

  14. April

Unfortunately Most oppinions are based on perceptions and expectations. Jerry could say we are going to bring in Donald Driver to be the number one receiver because he’s this or that and then he comes in and he doesn’t produce like he did when he was in GB right away and then he’s a bust. Just like we expect the Players to shut up and play. We should just shut up and watch how things play out. The same could be said about the Cowboys Season. All the naysayers were putting the Boys in the coffin but they turned it around. Before we call it on Roy we should let things play out. He may not be what YOU Expect him to be right now but he could still do somethings to help the Team Win. and its not like He doesn’t have A desire to do it. In the end Winning is what really counts here.

  15. Fredooch

I will agree to disagree with you April cause I dont think you pay a guy 8 million a year to do what Roy Williams has been doing lately. Like I said…T.O. came in here and immediatley produced…so did Keyshawn…what makes Roy Williams any different. And what many of you fail to realize is that John Kitna….the guy who was throwing to him before Romo…is on our team too and that hasnt helped. That should be a huge red flag there. Having a desire to do something and actually doing it are 2 different things as well April. Hell I had a desire to be a pro football player too and that didnt happen right? So does that mean everything is fine and dandy? Get my point? And comparing this team to what Roy Williams struggles also doesnt compare. We have been shutting up and been waiting for Roy Williams to play for a year….like I said…the guy isnt some snot nosed rookie out there. The guy has no heart…honeslty…with all that talent. Its a sad, sad situation. If there were any red flags while he was in Detroit it was that his practice habits were horrible. It shows in Dallas.

  16. Rob V.

    BUST!!

  17. Fredooch

Damn need I say more. Yeah he got over 100 yards recieving but his fumble changed that game.

  18. April

I understand your frustrations Fredooch you expect him to be something based on the money that he was paid to come here. Well if thats is the case then you should probably blame Jerry Jones. He’s the one that paid the man the money. its obvious that Roy is not T.O. or Keyshawn and my point is you should probably see that Roy is what he is regardless of the money he’s being paid. He is probably not going to live up to your expectations. Don’t get me wrong Roy needs to step up and do better but its your expectations that make him a Bust. Question if he should turn things around and play better and help the team win games will we be having this conversation..probalby not. and thats my point
