2010 NFL Draft: Is Jerry Jones Tipping His Hand?

With the NFL Draft less than a month away, has Cowboys owner Jerry Jones tipped his hand?
By now most of you are familiar with Dez Bryant, the star wide receiver from Oklahoma State. The Star-Telegram recently wrote that Bryant may have validated himself as the “best receiver in the NFL Draft” during his most recent workouts.
Bryant is a homegrown talent who hails from Lufkin, Texas. As a senior he was a member of the Texas Football Super Team first-team and was All-state selection after recording 53 receptions for 1,207 yards with 21 touchdowns.
Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll had some glowing remarks,
“He had a solid day. I don’t know how it will affect him, but he has terrific hands, catching ability, and I really think he looked best running his routes and making plays on the ball.”
KTRE Sports Director, Nick James, said the following:
”Dez looked explosive. He ran well, he caught the ball well and he looked like he was in shape.”
Jones and the rest of the Cowboys’ top brass will get their first up-close look at Bryant today and Thursday.
Yesterday, it was learned that Jerry Jones also plans to have dinner tonight with Bryant before a visit to Valley Ranch on Thursday.
The thing that interests me is why the sudden interest by the Cowboys in Bryant when everyone expects him to be long gone before the Cowboys select 27th in the draft?
With the emergence of Miles Austin and some great playmaking flashes from Kevin Ogletree, I didn’t see wide receiver as an area of deep concern for the Cowboys.
Although he was expected to be a definite top ten pick, Bryant could drop a little bit due to questions about his character, but definitely not as low as 27th. His stock has dropped simply because he was suspended for most of his senior season for lying about his involvement with Deion Sanders, yet another Cowboys connection.
Will the Cowboys make a push to trade up and select him on Draft Day? Who really knows, but it’s something worth keeping our eyes on.
Heck, he already owns an orange Cowboys jersey, how about a silver and blue one too?
Wow, very interesting. What Jerry wants, Jerry usually gets. He loves big name players, playmaker positions. Even though we need O-line and corners/safeties a little more.
If Jerry wants something bad enough it will happen, gotta love him for that!

I think all this is just Jerry attempting to feel the kid out. Bryant has many character issues and if Jerry is going to pull the trigger on him at any point in the draft, he wants to be absolutely positive that it will be worth the risk.

Bryant has many character issues? Like what? Other than him getting into trouble with his relationship or involvement with Deion Sanders, I wasn’t aware of any… hmmm…

Dez Bryant, as it appears before they play a down in the NFL is the best receiver in the draft. It would take a lot to make a play to grab him in this draft. I just don’t see this move likely considering what you’ve said about the emergence of Miles Austin, and what we’ve already gambled with Roy Williams in money and draft picks. I just don’t see this happening, not even in my wildest dreams. This is more of a “smoke screen” if anything. I don’t thank there is anything to this, other than just that.

if we are going to get shipley anyway why not pass on shipley and get a bigger faster more dominate of a reciever in Bryant…..I really think JJ might pull the trigger on this one and move up to get Dez

I see alot of Plaxico in him. It’s a good thing in a way. He seems like another big headed WR. If somehow he lands with us, I hope he’s a DeSean Jackson and not a Crabtree. Wait…WE HAVE MILES, CRAYTON AND OLGETREE! Do we really need another one? Really?

I don’t know why everyone is praising Kevin Olgetree. He hasn’t done anything to be worthy of such praise. He had 7 receptions for 96 yards. Of those 7 receptions and 1 reverse, he had 2 fumbles!!! Yes, we saw a glimpse of his speed, and that was exciting, but come on!!!

When you get a feeling about someone you go with it. And it wasn’t just me who had that feeling about Olgetree. It was a lot of other fans as well as Romo who had no issue throwing his way unlike Williams who he went away from as the season went on. I remember a lot of fans who didn’t think Austin could step up after Owens was released, but I think he did well for himself and the team.

Ok, the hype he is getting is a little much but its kinda like when we discovered the Patrick Crayton could be a weapon. You remember when TO was dropping balls and OVERRATED Terry Glenn was…being overrated. It’s more on the fact that if Roy still doesn’t get his act together we have Olgetree. I hated him for two years and now he’s a Cowboy and I am so happy.

if they could id take bryant and try to trade off williams for draft picks to help the safety n oline we cud use another big power runner if mblll dont wana play any more

Looks like I was totally wrong, and my wildest dreams came true!!!
Couldn’t be happier with our draft.
People are concerned with no attention to the offensive line and defensive backfield yet need to remember last years draft in Robert Brewster (3rd rounder) and Michael Hamlin which I’ve heard some great things about. We will see!
