According to Tim MacMahon of ESPN, Dez Bryant is still trying to get on the same page as Tony Romo as far as running his routes and being where he is supposed to be when the ball gets there. He writes,
For the first time in a practice open to the media, Bryant didn’t impress.
Bryant had a ball go right through his hands in the end zone during two-minute drills, a session of practice that caused Wade Phillips to question his team’s focus. Cornerback Jamar Wall came up with the rebound for an interception on what should have been a touchdown pass from Tony Romo.
There were at least two times Bryant and Romo weren’t on the same page with routes.
According to MacMahon, Bryant simply ran the wrong route on one pass to which Brant responded by smacking himself upside the head with both hands.
Bryant also made a sweet diving catch, but the only reason he had to go to the ground to get the ball is because he didn’t have the proper depth on the route.
“Romo said good catch, but I ran the route a little bit too deep,” Bryant said. “He just told me to flatten it down and if he wanted me to go deeper, he’ll put the ball out there for me to go deep. I’m glad it’s practice and not the game.”
For all the hype, Bryant still has a lot of work to do to get ready for his rookie season, MacMahon concludes.
However, on the flip-side of things, the Associated Press reported that Dez is having a blast and is officially scrimmaging with the first team.
“I’m having a lot of fun out there,” he said. “I’m having a lot of fun with everything. I’m enjoying everything. I feel comfortable. I feel like I’ve been here a long time. I haven’t had this feeling in a long time. I feel like I’m 100 percent back.”
On one pass which Bryant reeled in for a touchdown, he did a cart-wheel as he went into the end zone. I wish I could have seen the video of that. Bryant did this one night after making three slam dunks in a charity basketball game.
Bryant really seems to have a ton of energy and enthusiasm. This kid is going to be so much fun to watch.
