Insiders from ESPN and the NFL Network were reporting this past weekend that a Cowboys trade for Adam "Pacman" Jones was imminent and could be announced as early as this week. Pacman reportedly was in Dallas to discuss an expected contract renegotiation.

A few months back, I'd heard Pacman say that he wouldn't mind playing for the Cowboys when he was asked this question by the guy interviewing him, I believe on a station in Atlanta. I was completely against Pacman becoming a Cowboy at first, but I've since softened that stance considerably.  The dynamics of the situation suggests a good fit for both parties; Pacman gets one LAST shot at being an NFL player and the Cowboys get an electrifying talent at a position that they are most vulnerable, especially since losing both Jacque Reeves and Nate Jones to free agency.

Obviously, given Pacman's recent history, you wouldn't want to give up a first day pick and sign him to a deal with lots of guaranteed money, but giving up a 6th-7th round pick and perhaps a conditional late round pick in next years draft and signing him to an incentive based, zero tolerance contract that's salary cap friendly, would be fine and great value for a player that is so young and talented.

For once, I feel as though Pacman has clearly gotten the message that this is his LAST chance, and I have confidence that he will reward Jerry Jones and the Cowboys for taking a chance on him and do everything in his power to become a model citizen off the field--he has people in the Cowboys Family such as Calvin Hill, Michael Irvin and Deion Sanders that he can turn to.

Obviously, we also have to realize that Pacman has yet to be reinstated by the NFL, however, I'm confident that if the Cowboys secure Pacman, they will have a strong plan in place that they'd be able to present to Commissioner Goodell that may convince him to reinstate Pacman Jones.

With the draft just around the corner, some feel it's time to start thinking about a corner. It certainly seems that the deal for Tennessee Titan Adam Jones is inevitable but, considering his past antics, that brings little security at the position.

The Dallas secondary isn't nearly as inept as some "experts" would have you believe. Pro Bowl CB Terence Newman is coming in healthy this year which is huge. Anthony Henry holds his own most of the time. Henry had 6 interceptions in 13 games last season. While not stellar, that is still more than the two previous seasons(28 starts) combined. Newman had 4 INT's in as many games.

This "lacking secondary" had 19 INT's last year. Tied for 4th in the NFL in INT's doesn't seem lacking or inept to me. The secondary was and is above average in every category. Things have a tendency to get skewed because of the occasional big play given up by the secondary. Just keep in mind the injuries suffered by Newman and Henry throughout the season. Newman fought through foot and knee injuries throughout the 2007 campaign. Henry had a nasty ankle late last season. So the alarm about the Dallas secondary- at least the CB's- is much ado about nothing.

We all know Roy Williams isn't a traditional safety. I've been a huge critic of Williams over the last 2 seasons. Williams is a great run defender. He had 30 more tackles in 2007 than in the previous season. But I'm sure everyone will agree that if there is a hole in the secondary. That hole wears the number 31. He can't cover TE's like Shockey or Cooley consistently.

A 2/28/2008 report in the Star-Telegram brings up concerns about Williams' behavior in relations to the players and staff. The Star- Telegram reports: " He has become a bit of enigma in the locker room; the defense normally goes out to eat as a unit on Thursdays during game weeks, but Williams seldom attends. He has displayed a tendency to blame others for pass coverage breakdowns, something his teammates have noticed... Coaches, former coaches, teammates and ex-teammates have tried to talk to Williams, but they often receive the same defiant and defensive posturing he takes with his "friends" in the media."

Why not trade Williams? Nobody is going to take the salary cap hit that Williams would bring to the table. He signed a 4 year, $25 million extension in 2006. Trade him? Not gonna happen.

So as we approach the April 26 2008 draft, do we need go to after a corner? Maybe we consider a safety instead? Maybe use Williams in short-yardage and goal line situations in 2008? I don't pretend to know all the answers to these questions. What I do know is this team is so so close to that illusive 6th trophy. It's there for the taking. Right around the corner.

I just heard the rumors that are circulating regarding the Cowboys making a deal for Pacman Jones. If the rumor has any truth to it, then basically the Titans are just giving Pacman away. It doesn't say much for Pacman Jones when the team that drafted you and paved your way to stardom, basically traded you for a bag of stale donuts. (a seventh round pick) 

I sure hope there's no truth to any of this. Pacman is the last thing the Cowboys need right now. Unlike Terrell Owens, who was only guilty of having an over-inflated ego when we got him, Pacman has a seedy character and too many run-ins with the law. Adding such a bad influence to a team who is trying to recover from a second straight disappointing finish to their season is bad news.

What this team needs most is another hero, not a thug.

We should be looking for guys with strong character like Jason Witten and Marion Barber, not derelicts like Pacman Jones.

Unconfirmed sources in Dallas are reporting that the Tennessee Titans and the Dallas Cowboys have agreed in principle to a trade that brings Pacman to Dallas for a 7th round draft choice. More details to be available soon.

Rumors are beginning to swirl about the Cowboy’s interest in Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones. Jones is arguably one of the best young DB’s/ return specialists in the NFL today. In 2006 he recorded 62 tackles, one sack, 1 forced fumble, 12 deflected passes, 4 interceptions, 130 return yards, one interception touchdown, 14 passes defended (second-team), 440 punt return yards and tied for NFL-high with 3 punt return touchdowns. Those are impressive numbers by anyone’s standards.

Now for the bad news. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 12 months, you know about Pacman’s 2007 season. Or should I say non-season.

Just before the 2007 draft Jones was involved an incident in a Las Vegas strip club that resulted in a fist fight and a shooting that paralyzed one man. On April 10, 2007, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced a 1-year suspension for Jones, to be re-evaluated after the 10th regular-season game. After a meeting between Goodell and Jones on November 5, 2007, it was announced Jones would not be reinstated during the 2007 season.

My advice to Jerry Jones and the Cowboys organization: Don’t be misled to think this player can change. He’s been given second chances before. He will be a "cancer" to this franchise. There are plenty of players available without the baggage/criminal history of Jones.

July 13, 2005 - Arrested and charged with assault and felony vandalism after a nightclub altercation. This began Pacman Jones NFL rap sheet. He already had a lengthy one from high school and college.

September 5, 2005 - Adam was invited to attend the Nashville Sports Council Kickoff Luncheon. Jones went off on a verbal tirade while being told to wait for his car after the event. He then refused to tip the valet service.

October 2005 - State of West Virginia filed a petition stating that Jones had not been contacting his probation officer and that he had not reported his July 2005 arrest. The judge extended the probation for just 90 days.

October 26, 2006 - Jones was issued a citation for misdemeanor assault after a female student from Tennessee State University claimed that Jones spit in her face at a Nashville night club.

Feburary 19, 2007 - Jones was in the middle of a fight and shooting at a strip club in Las Vegas that left one man paralyzed and two more wounded. The fight broke out after Jones showered strippers on stage with $81,000 dollars. The club owner claims Jones was beating a strippers head against the bar while claiming to kill one of the club’s employees.

January 3, 2008 - PacmanFebruary is accused of punching Wanda S. Jackson in the face at an Atlanta strip club called the Body Tap Strip Club. Jackson says Jones reached over the counter and sucker punched her in her left eye.

I love the Dallas Cowboys. All I can do is hope Jerry Jones does the right thing.

The year 1980 was a great year. I know that because I graduated from High School and my hero, Danny White began his reign as QB of the Dallas Cowboys. Little did we know that the future of the Dallas Cowboys would be put upon the shoulders of a certain baby boy born on April 21st of that year in San Diego, California. His name, Antonio Ramiro "Tony" Romo.
 
Tony Romo is a third generation Mexican-American on his father's side and Polish-German on his Mother's side. As an adolescent Tony's grandfather emigrated to San Antonio, Texas. He believes Tony's success is an example of the possibilities that can happen living in the United States.
 
Tony was born in San Diego where his father was serving in the military, but his family returned to their home in Burlington, Wisconsin when he was 2 years old. He played quarterback his junior and senior years in High School where he made the All Racine County football team.
 
Tony Romo attended college at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois majoring in business. In 1999, his first year of collegiate football he only played in three games but his stats were good and he was red shirted as a true freshman. His sophomore year is when he kicked it into gear and ranked second in Division 1-AA in passing efficiency.
 
On December 19, 2002 Tony Romo was the first player in Eastern Illinois and Ohio Valley Conference history to win the Walter Payton Award given annually to the nation's top player. Tony finished his career holding school and conference records with 85 touchdown passes and 8,212 passing yards. Tony's senior year he racked up 3,149 total yards in offense and ranked third in conference history. Along with the Walter Payton Award he earned consensus All America honors. He was also selected All Ohio Valley Conference and was named OVC player of the Year for the third straight year.
 
To begin his career in the NFL Tony attended the 2003 NFL Scouting Combine hoping to impress scouts. Despite intriguing some he went undrafted during the 2003 draft. However, Sean Payton, the Cowboys assistant head coach/QB coach at the time, had assured Tony that the Cowboys were interested and shortly after was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent. 
 
Entering the 2003 training camp he was  third on the Cowboys' depth chart behind Quincy Carter and Chad Hutchinson. In 2004, the Cowboys released Hutchinson and signed veteran quarterback Vinny Testaverde and traded a 3rd round draft pick to the Houston Texans for quarterback Drew Henson. Tony faced being cut from the roster until Quincy Carter was released  because of   allegations of substance abuse. After Vinny's Testaverde's time in Dallas ended in 2005, the Cowboys signed another veteran quarterback Drew Bledsoe, making him the 8th starting quarterback of the Cowboys since 2000. All along the real deal was standing on the sidelines carrying his clipboard, with his cap on backwards, smiling and learning everything he could, waiting for his chance.
 
In 2005 and 2006 pre-season Tony Romo looked pretty good, a lot of fans were wondering why weren't we giving him a chance to play. Apparently Sean Payton was thinking the same thing because he offered a third round draft pick for Tony, but Jerry Jones refused. Thank you Jerry!
 
Finally to a happy roaring Cowboy crowd, Tony Romo started his legacy by replacing Drew  Bledsoe for the start of the second half during a Monday Night Football game on October 23, 2006. Two days later Bill Parcells announced that Tony Romo would be the starting quarterback for their next game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday Night Football. Tony led the Cowboys to a win in his first game as a starter, 35-14 and was Sunday Night Football's "Rock Star of the Game".  But his first pass and touchdown came three weeks before playing against the Texans when his first NFL pass resulted in a 33 yard completion to Sam Hurd and in the same game he threw his first touchdown pass to guess who, that's right Mr. Terrell Owens.
 
Tony had played in just eight games as a starter when it was announced that Tony would be attending the 2007 Pro Bowl.
 
With success comes the talk of contracts, big contracts. Jerry Jones opted to let the unproven quarterback play unsigned to begin his first year in charge, just to make sure he was worth a huge commitment. Tony answered quickly becoming the NFC's offensive player of the month in September and Dallas finished October as the No. 1 offense in the conference.  Jerry Jones didn't wait until the offseason to sign his quarterback of the future to a six-year $67.5 million contract extension, $30 million of which is guaranteed. The deal includes an $11.5 million signing bonus. Tony replied, "I'm going to be with the Cowboys the rest of my career. I love it! It is a great feeling you have when the organization and the people stand behind you and you can be the quarterback for a long, long time. It makes you feel good as a person and a player."
 
Tony has stepped into the role of quarterback of "America's Team" very nicely. He has already dated country star Carrie Underwood, been linked in the tabloids with Britney Spears, and is currently dating Jessica Simpson. "It comes with the territory, I guess," Tony replied when asked about the huge interest in his love life.
 
With Tony as our quarterback Cowboy fans know we have the leadership and talent to win another Super Bowl. That is what Tony's legacy will depend on. To be a Hall of Fame Quarterback in the NFL and especially of the Dallas Cowboys, a Super Bowl ring must be worn.

One of the things that make fans and players like Tony is his personality, so I am going to let Tony end this article with one of his famous quotes. "You try to work hard and get better each week. I play the game with passion. I enjoy the game. It's a lot of fun when I'm out there. That's the way I play. For some reason, people like that."

2. St Louis Rams – OT Jake Long – Michigan – SR 6’7   335 lbs. (With all the problems on the offensive line for the Rams, they would be dummy’s for letting Long get passed them, for he can be the anchor of that O-line for the next 10 years.)

3. Atlanta Falcons – QB Matt Ryan – Boston College – SR 6’4   228 lbs. (With Falcon fans still reeling from the Michael Vick saga, QB is the biggest need for this organization. Playing QB Roulette last year with has-beens as well didn’t help the cause.)

4. Oakland Raiders - RB Darren McFadden – Arkansas – JR 6’1   211 lbs. (The Raiders need a Star at Running Back. With McFadden’s speed and size, Al Davis would be a total moron not to draft the Best running back of the 2008 draft.)  

5. Kansas City Chiefs – DT Glenn Dorsey – LSU - SR 6’1     310 lbs. (The Chiefs have pressing needs in many areas but D-Line is one of the biggest.)

6. New York Jets – DT Sedrick Ellis – USC – SR 6’0      309 lbs. (The Jets had absolutely no pass rush in 2007. Selecting Ellis not only makes sense but the guy can dominate the inside forcing teams who use a ground game to go vertical more often than they want.)

7. New England Patriots – DE Vernon Gholston – Ohio State – SR 6’4     255lbs. (With New England getting a taste of the blitz happy New York Giants in Super Bowl 42, the aging Patriots LB Core could use a shot of the fountain of youth and return the favor to opposing offenses in 2008.)

8. Baltimore Ravens – QB Brian Brohm – Louisville – SR 6’3       230lbs. (With the Ravens pressing need at QB and the ever vigilant legs of Steve McNair no longer running, Brohm seems the logical pick for the Ravens.)

13. Carolina Panthers – RB Rashard Mendenhall – Illinois - JR 5’11      225lbs. (With DeShaun Foster no longer a Panther, Mendenhall gives the Panthers that Brian Westbrook Philadelphia element to the offense.)

14. Chicago Bears – QB Joe Flacco – Delaware (1AA)- SR 6’6       231 lbs. (With all the problems the Bears have had in past few years at QB, Flacco immediately comes in and give Grossman a run for his money. Flacco displayed the best and strongest arm at the NFL Combine.)

15. Detroit Lions – CB Leodis McKelvin – Troy – SR 5’11      186lbs. (With the Lions pretty solid on offense, the Detroit secondary needs help badly. McKelvin brings that help immediately.)

16. Arizona Cardinals – CB Mike Jenkins – South Florida – SR 5’11      200 lbs. (Rated as the best cover corner in many draft boards, Jenkins will make an impact early and often in the Cardinal’s secondary.)

18. Houston Texas – RB Jonathon Stewart – Oregon – JR 5’11           233 lbs. (With the Texans solid at QB and WR, Stewart would bring defenses to respect the running for once in the Texans history.)

19. Philadelphia Eagles – WR DeSaun Jackson – California – JR 5’9      169 lbs. (With the Eagles offense lacking any big play receivers ever since T.O. left, Jackson’s speed will stretch defenses.)

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – WR Mario Manningham – Michigan – JR 6’0      188 lbs. (With the Bucs offense lacking a complimentary receiver to Joey Galloway in 2007, teams doubled him in the latter part of the season. Manningham will provide Galloway much needed relief and could eventually replace him.)

21. Washington Redskins – FS Kenny Phillips – Miami – JR 6’2        210 lbs. ( With the tragic loss of Sean Taylor, the redskins will once again have one of the best one two punch at safety in the NFL with Phillips and Landry.)

22. Dallas Cowboys - WR Limas Sweed – Texas – SR 6’4     214 lbs. (With T.O. & T.G. both in their mid-30’s, Sweed’s youth and potential automatically threatens Crayton’s 3^rd spot.)

23. Pittsburgh Steelers – OT Chris Williams – Vanderbilt – SR 6’6      321 lbs. (Considered by many to be the most athletically gifted tackle in the draft, Williams’s stock rose after Pitt’s Jeff Otah had a bad NFL Combine.)

24. Tennessee Titans – WR James Hardy – Indiana – JR 6’6         220 lbs. (Having the best size of any receiver in the draft, Hardy will provide the possession receiver that Vince Young has sorely missed since his Texas days.)

25. Seattle Seahawks – TE Dustin Keller – Purdue – SR 6’3       244 lbs. (Seattle has never had a great pass catching TE and Keller has been the most consistent pass catching TE in college football in the past 2 years. Need anything more?)

26. Jacksonville Jaguars – RB Felix Jones – Arkansas – JR 5’10     210 lbs. (Even though RB Fred Taylor was voted to his first Pro bowl, he isn’t getting any younger. The Jaguars going to the 2 back system will add some burst to Taylor’s legs in the latter part of the season.)

27. San Diego Chargers – OT Gosder Cherilus – Boston College – SR 6’7    315 lbs. (Upgrading an aging O-Line would be the Chargers best bet.)

28. Dallas Cowboys – CB Dominique Rodgers - Cromartie – Tennessee State – SR 6’2     185 lbs. (With the Boys having no solid back-up’s to Newman and Henry, Cromartie becomes the grasshopper to Newman.) 

29. San Francisco 49ers (*via trade with Colts) – WR Devin Thomas – Michigan State – JR 6’2    220 lbs. (With the 49ers lacking any star receivers, Thomas is the best receiver left on the board. He is tall and can run the deep pattern.)

30. Green Bay Packers – TE Fred Davis – USC – SR 6’5        252 lbs. (With Bubba Franks no longer a Packer, TE is a priority if Green Bay doesn’t want to become one dimensional.)

31. New England Cheatriots – (Picked forfeited due to Spy Gate Scandal by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.)

32. New York Giants – LB Dan Conner – Penn State – SR 6’3      233 lbs. (Very versatile linebacker who broke school records at Penn. Could be moved inside and outside. The Giants would love this guy.)

In weeks leading up to free agency, the buzz was the Cowboys would trade up to secure the number one pick in the 2008 NFL Draft and grab Arkansas’ stand-out running back Darren McFadden. Those rumors have since subsided but there are plenty of fans that think this is a great idea. I’m not one of them.

Please don’t misunderstand. I realize McFadden is a great player and is probably worthy of a top 5 spot in this year’s draft. But having him isn’t a necessity for the Cowboys to ensure success in the foreseeable future. In fact, this year’s class of running backs is loaded with talent. Talent that can be obtained easily without any need of changing position in the draft or giving away any picks.

Oregon Duck Jonathan Stewart has tremendous up-side. At 5-10 and 235 lbs this kid still managed to run a 4.44 40, has a vertical leap of 36.5 and benched 225 lbs 28 times at the combine in Indianapolis. Are you kidding me?? This guy is a bruiser and would be an amazing compliment to Marion Barber.

East Carolina’s Chris Johnson was the fastest running back at the combine(4.20 40) and could be easily snatched up in the second round. At 5-11 and 200 lbs he’s not the biggest back out there but could definitely add that "wow factor" Jerry Jones has been talking about.

Of course there are other areas the team needs to address besides running back. We all know the wide receivers are not getting any younger. T.O. is solid but I worry about the oft-injured Glenn. Patrick Crayton is a good-but not great receiver. No worries. That’s the beauty of having two first round picks.

Longhorn Limas Sweed is a no-brainer late in the first round. The 6-4 216 lb receiver ran a 4.46 40 and just imagine him lining up across from T.O.. Now THAT is a "wow factor".

Michigan State’s Devin Thomas. At 6-1 215 lbs he ran a blazing 4.32 40 at the combine. He could easily fall to the second round.

In my next blog I’ll discuss the defensive prospects in this year’s draft. But I’d like to add that I think Jerry Jones needs to get on the phone with Arthur Blank and start working on a deal to land DeAngelo Hall before it’s too late.

Wow wow wow wow wow! What a night we had last night. My son and I were fortunate enough to have been invited to volunteer at the bowling night fund raiser for The Gift of Life Foundation. The Foundation was started by Everson Walls and Ron Springs to raise money and awareness for organ donation.

We were advised to get there early so we could choose our job. Well we were the first ones and man did we get the best job in the house! We worked the Celebrity sign in table. When we saw the list of who was coming, we could hardly wait until 6. It was only 3:30 so we had to keep ourselves occupied or the anticipation would have driven us insane.

Everson Walls and several members of the Springs family were there when we first arrived. Everson came by the table looking for some muscle to carry some boxes in. I asked JD if he would like to help Everson and he nearly tripped over himself. I didn’t see him again until 6 rolled around because he was helping do all the guy stuff and making friends with everyone. It paid off for him later!

The first person we checked in was Tony Dorsett. He has several companies and sponsored two lanes. All of his offspring and his beautiful wife were with him. Tony looks like a million bucks and his eldest son Anthony looks like a movie star. A couple of guys came in after that and I had to ask them who they were unfortunately. Then they came in droves. It was overwhelming. Three guys sauntered up to the table together arms around each other and all I could think of is that I wished my mom was there to see these three. It was Roger Staubach, Billy Joe Dupree and Tony Hill. My night could have been complete then. They kept coming in so fast, so many stars (Mel Renfro, Drew Pearson, Robert Newhouse, Michael Downs, Doug Donley, Too Tall Jones, Timmy Newsome, Russell Maryland, and more) that I didn’t really absorb what had just passed before me until later.

Once everyone had been checked in, we were able to mingle. It was really an awesome sight to see. All these pro athletes retired, and current players, gathering to honor Ron Springs and help raise money for those needing a transplant. But for me as a fan, I loved watching the reunion between them all. I loved seeing the young players like Tyson Thompson and Jason Hatcher paying respect to the retired guys. What a privilege this was to be such a huge Cowboys fan and see all these generations of Cowboys in the same place together, just being regular people and bowling, and visiting with each other and entertaining the fans that had paid to be there. This was a corporate thing. If a company made a sizeable donation, they were able to come and play with a celebrity.

Every person I asked to take a picture with JD was very kind about it. Tyson Thompson and Shawn Springs even stopped to talk to him a minute. They had all seen the kid working at the event and were thanking him for his help. Everson Walls was calling him by his first name and acknowledging him every time he saw him. This was a wonderful event. I was so proud to be a Cowboy fan last night. I never asked for an autograph or picture for myself. I really didn’t even think about it because my son was having the time of his life. Just as I had realized we didn’t get any autographs and that we needed to head home, my son appeared with a football autographed by every Cowboy player that was there. These were for the corporate sponsors that had paid to be there. I am not going to rat anyone out for sneaking this football to him but let me tell you that it was the end to an evening most kids may never even dream of. My son the jock who thinks he is too cool to be excited was squealing. It was a night neither of us will soon forget. The Dallas Cowboys are a first class organization with a long list of first class players that treated us with such kindness last night. I wish all of you could have been there with us. We’re still on cloud nine 24 hours later.

Linebacker Zack Thomas is back in Texas after he was released by the Miami Dolphins on Valentines Day. Zach was just one of the many released by Bill Parcells as he makes massive changes in the sunshine state. The Dolphins drafted Thomas in 1996 in the 5th round. The 7 time Pro Bowler had been a work horse in their defense for 12 years. He has recorded over 1,800 tackles in his career.
 
Thomas is 1 of 3 players to record 100 or more tackles in each of his first ten seasons in the NFL. Thomas is currently ranking 4th all time in tackles behind Randy Gradishar, Jesse Tuggle and Junior Seau. He has more tackles than any linebacker in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
 
For those who are thinking about his age, I started looking into what he did the last couple of years. In September Oliver Hoyte, who was let go to make room on the roster, coincidentally gave Thomas a concussion which led him to miss most of the season because of migraines and concussions. Playing only five games he was able to rack up 52 total tackles. In 2006 his total tackles were consistent with years past with 165. Through the years his stats have remained the same.
 
Born a Texan, Zach played his college career at Texas Tech where he was a three year starter as linebacker. Thomas has won numerous awards during both his college and professional career.
 
After receiving contract offers from New Orleans and New England he made the decision to move home to Texas and become a Dallas Cowboy.

Another Cowboy leaves Dallas for Miami. Safety Keith Davis signed with the Dolphins yesterday in what they are calling a "depth" move by Bill Parcells. Davis agreed to a two-year $3.5 million deal.

At age 29, Keith Davis is excellent on special teams but never developed fully as a starting safety. In addition, Davis experienced a torn pectoral muscle and opted for surgery to repair it after the season ended.

A lot of fans are continuously asking why we aren't signing Marion Barber - you say 'do it now', 'give him the money!' Well the truth is the Cowboys don't have the money because of the salary cap. They have $3.9 million left and are number 30 of 32 in the list of NFL teams money left under the cap. We still need some funds for the draft, in which the Cowboys hope to pick up some future stars.

That's why they issued Barber the highest tender, it was the best way to keep him safe. God forbid someone makes Barber an offer and the Cowboys have to counter-offer, they will have to move some numbers. If all goes well, Barber will probably get a long term deal this summer or during the next season. Don't sweat it!

NFL Salary Cap Facts:
2008 numbers: Cap = $116 million, Floor = 85.2% of cap = $98.8 million

In transitions, if a player retires, is traded, or is cut before June 1st, all remaining bonus is applied to the salary cap for the current season. If the payroll change occurs after June 1st, the current cap is unchanged, and the next year's cap must absorb the entire remaining bonus.

Because of this treatment, NFL contracts almost always include the right to cut a player before the beginning of a season. If a player is cut, his salary for the remainder of his contract is not paid, and never counted against the salary cap for that team. A highly sought-after player signing a long term contract will usually receive a guaranteed signing bonus, thus providing him with financial security even if he is cut before the end of his contract.

After the Steelers had won their fourth Superbowl title in 1980, they came up with a slogan to describe their hopes for the following season.  The slogan was, “One for the thumb in 81” meaning that many of the players had earned four Superbowl Rings in the past decade and were planning on getting a fifth one for the following season.  Unfortunately for the Steelers, none of those players ever achieved the goal of a fifth ring as a player.

Thus far, the only man in NFL history to earn five Superbowl rings as a player is Charles Haley. Haley earned two of those rings with the San Francisco 49ers and then three more while playing for the Dallas Cowboys.

Haley played outside linebacker for the 49ers from 1986-1991 and helped them earn two championships in Superbowl XXIII  (1988) and Superbowl XXIV (1989). After several  well-publicized confrontations with his 49er teammates and the coaching staff, Haley was traded to Dallas during the 1992 off-season.

Although Haley gained a reputation as a disgruntled and malcontent player during his first years with San Francisco, he found a home in Dallas. From 1992-1996 Haley filled the position of defensive end for the Cowboys and was an integral part of their success and Superbowl Dynasty of the 90s.  During this era, as you know, the Cowboys won Superbowls XXVII (1992), XXVIII (1993) and XXX (1995). 

In 1996, Haley made the decision to retire after suffering a herniated disc five games into the season. In 1998, Haley came out of retirement to aid his old team, the 49ers in post-season play.  The following year, 1999, he returned and played a full season with the 49ers before finally retiring for good.

Haley’s accomplishments during his 12 year career are quite impressive. He had 100.5 sacks, 485 tackles with 13 assists, 26 forced fumbles, and 1 safety.  He had 2 interceptions and 8 fumble recoveries, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Haley was named to 5 Pro Bowls (88, 90, 91, 94, and 95) and was named an NFL All-Pro in 1990 and 1994. In addition, he was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.

The late Bill Walsh called Haley "one of the greatest players of our era." At one point, he was considered the best pass rusher in all of football.” Former Cowboys quarterback, Troy Aikman, said, “In my opinion, we would not have experienced the run of success we enjoyed here if it were not for Charles Haley’s contributions.”

Many people, myself included, believe Haley’s personal accomplishments have earned him a spot in the NFL Hall of Fame, but unfortunately, he has not been able to make the list of 15 finalists in his first few years of eligibility. Hopefully, the NFL will rectify this situation in the near future. Until then, Charles, we Cowboy fans offer up our gratitude and recognize your contributions to America’s Team. Thanks.

Adam Bernard Jones, more commonly know as "Pacman" Jones has publicly announced he wants to be a Cowboy. I know its not the first time I've heard this presumption and until he finds a home I'm sure it won't be the last. But will Jerry Jones look past all of Pacman's troubles and give him a shot in Dallas?

I don't know of any fan that would put it past Jerry. But I know many fans that wouldn't agree with this move. But since when do the Cowboys judge players by their off-field behavior? Let me remind you of a Hall of Famer by the name of Michael Irvin. Do you remember Leon Lett's drug problems in the 90's? It's not a thing of the past either, how about the 2007 acquisition of Tank Johnson while he was still under suspension.

I have heard some compare Pacman Jones coming to Dallas to Terrell Owens moving to Dallas in 2006. Have you lost your mind? That's not even a comparison. Owens has never had legal problems - distractions and teammate problems, yes. But how do you compare the two? I guess the fact that everyone thought T.O. would be a cancer on the team may be an argument, Owens certainly proved everyone wrong.

Jerry Jones may have a heart for troubled players with a great amount of talent, but it may not be worth the risk. Its not even a certainty that Pacman will be reinstated by the NFL. Dallas is in a big need for a cornerback. Its a tough call and I'm glad I don't have to make that risky decision.

Personally, I think NFL needs a no tolerance policy. This is ridiculous that we are even contemplating acquiring a man who has been involved in a shooting, assault, vandalism, public intoxication and illegal drugs to name a few. Why do they allow criminals to become famous and make millions? And why do people born with such amazing God-given talent decide to throw it away?

According to several reports Julius Jones has agreed to terms with the Seattle Seahawks. This will end Jones' 4-year tenure with the Dallas Cowboys.

We all knew that Julius wanted out of Dallas and wanted to be a lone starter after Marion Barber took the running back spotlight in 2007. Jones had a 1,000 in 2006, but after splitting time again with Barber in 2007, he finished with only 164 carries for 588 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Jones' will probably end Shaun Alexander's reign in Seattle but may end up sharing carries with T.J. Duckett and Maurice Morris.

Good luck Julius... well, except when we are playing your new team!

It is interesting to note that out of the 31 other teams in the NFL, the Cowboys have a winning record against 22 of those teams, they have a losing record against 5 teams (Ravens, Browns, Dolphins, Raiders and 49ers), and their record is at .500 with 4 teams (Broncos, Texans, Jaguars, and Rams).

January 17, 1937 – February 29, 2008

Gilbert Leroy “Buddy” Dial passed away on Friday, February 29th, at the age of 71.  Dial was a star wide receiver who played 8 years in the NFL, first for the Pittsburgh Steelers and then for the Dallas Cowboys.

Dial played with the Steelers from 1959-1963 and was then traded to the Cowboys per his request in 1964 and remained with the Cowboys until his retirement in 1966.  During his career Dial made 261 receptions for a total of 5,436 yards and 44 touchdowns.  His best year was in 1963, with the Steelers, when he caught 60 passes for 1,295 yards and 9 touchdowns.  His per catch average remains the second-highest in NFL history at 20.8 yards per catch.  Dial made the Pro Bowl in 1961 and 1963, and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the National High School Hall of Fame.

The bulk of Dial’s productivity came during his years with Pittsburgh. In his final three years with Dallas, Dial was not as productive due to nagging injuries that eventually left him largely disabled after his football career was over.

Dial passed away Friday, February 29th in a Houston Hospital after being recently admitted for treatment of cancer and pneumonia.

It appears as if the Dallas Cowboys are content with the current roster. Jerry Jones must know something the rest of the Dallas Cowboys Nation doesn’t. Dallas has not brought in any big name free agents or any free agents for that matter to Valley Ranch for even a visit with the exception of Zach Thomas. With those of you content with the current roster let me say this, this roster hasn’t changed much since the divisional round playoff loss against the Giants in January. All the starters that started on both sides of the ball are still there. There have been no major upgrades so far this off-season. All we have really done is signed our own free agents. Flozell “2 full starts per game” Adams got a 6 yr deal done before the start of free agency and Ken Hamlin got the franchise tag. Marion Barber and Chris Canty both got tendered. So, any of you excited so far? Personally, the loss against the Giants left a real sour taste in my mouth. It proved that we were weak in some areas and needed upgrades in others. So far, nothing has happened and I am worried guys. I can’t believe I am saying this but I am not excited so far about going into next season with basically the same team as last year. I’m not. If Terrell Owens or Terry Glenn are injured in 2008 we become an average team. If Marion Barber goes down we have an average team. Heaven forbid, if Tony Romo goes down we have a descent team. So LoneStarStruckers, are you guys fine with basically going into 2008 with the same team as last year? Let me know?

Danny White came to the Cowboys in 1976 as a backup quarterback to Roger Staubach and to do duty as the Cowboys punter.  He had spent the previous two years (1974-1975) in the World Football League with the Memphis Southmen.  Danny remained at the backup quarterback position through the 1979 season when Staubach retired, giving White his opportunity to lead the offense starting in 1980.

White led the Cowboys to three consecutive NFC Championship games (1980-1982) and made the Pro Bowl in 1982.  The Cowboys lost all three championship games despite being favored and White was severely criticized for his role in those losses. In 1983 Danny had his best season ever statistically, leading the Cowboys to a 12-4 record and another playoff appearance.  Despite the 12-4 record, the Cowboys finished 2nd to the Redskins in the NFC East and then lost the Wildcard Playoff game to the L.A. Rams bringing about further calls for White to be replaced.

In 1984, Danny lost the starting QB spot to Gary Hogeboom, but Hogeboom’s ineffectiveness led Landry to place White back in the starting position and the team finished 9-7 missing the playoffs.  In 1985, White led the Cowboys back to the playoffs after finishing first in the NFC East, but once again, they were defeated in the post season by the L.A. Rams. In 1986, the Cowboys found themselves with a 6-2 record, tied for the lead in the NFC East and ranked as the #1 offense in the NFL. Then White suffered a broken wrist against the Giants which ended his season. Steve Pelluer took over as QB and the Cowboys finished with a 7-9 record and their first losing season since 1964. In 1987, White again returned as the starter but was eventually replaced by Steve Pelluer and the Cowboys finished with a 7-8 record (one game was canceled). In 1988, Pelluer became the starter during training camp and White remained as backup for the entire season while the team finished with a dismal 3-13 record. In 1989, with the Cowboys under  a new owner and coach, White’s contract was not renewed and he decided to retire.

At the end of his career, Danny had racked up 1,761 completions on 2,950 attempts for 21,959 yards.  He passed for 155 touchdowns and 132 interceptions. In the area of rushing, he gained 482 yards and scored 8 touchdowns. Another interesting stat about Danny is the fact that he had two pass receptions for touchdowns which resulted from half-back option passes.  As punter, Danny punted 610 times for 24,509 yards, had an average of 40.4 yards per punt. 144 punts were inside the 20 yard line and he had 77 touchbacks. His record as the Cowboys' starting quarterback was 62-32 during the regular season and 5-5 during the playoffs.

After his retirement as a player, Danny White has continued to be successful as a head coach in the Arena Football League, winning two Arena Bowl Championships in 1994 and 1997.

The late Tom Landry, said this of Danny White:  "I don’t know of any quarterback who could have replaced a Roger Staubach and done a better job…Not many people realize what a fine quarterback Danny White was.  He threw more touchdown passes than either Staubach or Meredith.  And in 1983 he had the best statistical year a Cowboys’ quarterback ever had when he set club season records for 3,980 passing yards and twenty-nine touchdown passes.  Danny White was probably as fine a winner as we have had in football."

• Best Single Game Pass Percentage (21-24, 87.5%)
• Most pass attempts (53) and completions (32) in a playoff game
• Most punts (11) in a game and a career (612)

Statistically, Danny White stacks up very well against other quarterbacks with the Cowboys and other football organizations. He broke many of Staubach’s individual records and Aikman was unable to top White in many areas during his stellar career. Now, under Romo, more of White’s records are starting to fall. Personally, I believe Danny has never received the praise he deserved as a quarterback largely due to the fact that he never led the Boys to a Superbowl title. If the Cowboys had earned at least one Superbowl Championship under Danny, would we see him differently today? Replacing Staubach might have been a no-win situation for any quarterback.  Could he have been one of the “Great Ones” if he had been placed with a better supporting cast?  I’m not sure if he could have been but I do know this:  Danny was a very good quarterback, one who wore the Star well, and one who deserves far more accolades than he gets among fans today.

1. Miami Dolphins – DE Chris Long – Virginia – SR 6’3   266lbs. (With Glenn Dorsey’s health issues coming into play lately, this seems the logical choice for a Bill Parcell’s type pick and guy.)

2. St Louis Rams – OT Jake Long – Michigan – SR 6’7   335 lbs. (With all the problems on the offensive line for the Rams, they would be dummy’s for letting Long get passed them, for he can be the anchor of that O-line for the next 10 years.)

3. Atlanta Falcons – QB Matt Ryan – Boston College – SR 6’4   228 lbs. (With Falcon fans still reeling from the Michael Vick saga, QB is the biggest need for this organization. Playing QB Roulette last year with has-beens as well didn’t help the cause.)

4. Dallas Cowboys (*Via trade with the Oakland Raiders) – RB Darren McFadden – Arkansas – JR 6’1   211 lbs. (Jerry Jones stated in the off-season that he wanted to add that wow factor to his offense and with his close ties and alliance with Al Davis, this was a no-brainer. McFadden & Barber will be ravaging defenses for the next 5 years.)

*Oakland receives Dallas # 22 this year, Dallas # 28 this year, Dallas 2^nd Round Pick in 2009 and Dallas DT Marcus Spears.

5. Kansas City Chiefs – DT Glenn Dorsey – LSU - SR 6’1     310 lbs. (The Chiefs have pressing needs in many areas but D-Line is one of the biggest.)

6. New York Jets – DT Sedrick Ellis – USC – SR 6’0      309 lbs. (The Jets had absolutely no pass rush in 2007. Selecting Ellis not only makes sense but the guy can dominate the inside forcing teams who use a ground game to go vertical more often than they want.)

7. New England Patriots – DE Vernon Gholston – Ohio State – SR 6’4     255lbs. (With New England getting a taste of the blitz happy New York Giants in Super Bowl 42, the aging Patriots LB Core could use a shot of the fountain of youth and return the favor to opposing offenses in 2008.)

8. Baltimore Ravens – QB Brian Brohm – Louisville – SR 6’3       230lbs. (With the Ravens pressing need at QB and the ever vigilant legs of Steve McNair no longer running, Brohm seems the logical pick for the Ravens.)

9. Cincinnati Bengals – OLB Keith Rivers – USC – SR 6’3       232 lbs. (With the Bengals defense getting torched last year due to a non-existent pass rush, Rivers play-making ability is a welcomed sigh of relief.)

10. New Orleans Saints – CB Aqib Talib – Kansas – JR 6’2      205 lbs. (The Saints should be not only ecstatic but should be counting their blessings that Talib fell this far. Talib immediately starts and helps a defense that gave up the big play way too often in 2007.)  

11. Buffalo Bills – WR Malcolm Kelly – Oklahoma – JR 6’4       224 lbs. (With the Bills not having a big play threat opposite Lee Evans this pick immediately supplies Trent Edwards with a possession receiver who can move the sticks.)

12. Denver Broncos – OT Ryan Clady – Boise State – JR 6’6       320 lbs. (With Jay Cutler’s blindside not really protected, Clady provides protection against elite NFL pass rushers immediately.)

13. Carolina Panthers – RB Rashard Mendenhall – Illinois - JR 5’11      225lbs. (With DeShaun Foster no longer a Panther, Mendenhall gives the Panthers that Brian Westbrook Philadelphia element to the offense.)

14. Chicago Bears – QB Joe Flacco – Delaware (1AA)- SR 6’6       231 lbs. (With all the problems the Bears have had in past few years at QB, Flacco immediately comes in and give Grossman a run for his money. Flacco displayed the best and strongest arm at the NFL Combine.)

15. Detroit Lions – CB Leodis McKelvin – Troy – SR 5’11      186lbs. (With the Lions pretty solid on offense, the Detroit secondary needs help badly. McKelvin brings that help immediately.)

16. Arizona Cardinals – CB Mike Jenkins – South Florida – SR 5’11      200 lbs. (Rated as the best cover corner in many draft boards, Jenkins will make an impact early and often in the Cardinal’s secondary.)

17. Minnesota Vikings – DE/OLB Derrick Harvey – Florida- JR 6’4       269lbs. ( The Vikings need pass rushers, enough said.)

18. Houston Texas – RB Jonathon Stewart – Oregon – JR 5’11           233 lbs. (With the Texans solid at QB and WR, Stewart would bring defenses to respect the running game for once in the Texans history.)

19. Philadelphia Eagles – WR DeSaun Jackson – California – JR 5’9      169 lbs. (With the Eagles offense lacking any big play receivers ever since T.O. left, Jackson’s speed will stretch defenses.)

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – WR Mario Manningham – Michigan – JR 6’0      188 lbs. (With the Bucs offense lacking a complimentary receiver to Joey Galloway in 2007, teams doubled him in the latter part of the season. Manningham will provide Galloway much needed relief and could eventually replace him.)

21. Washington Redskins – FS Kenny Phillips – Miami – JR 6’2        210 lbs. ( With the tragic loss of Sean Taylor, the redskins will once again have one of the best one two punch at safety in the NFL with Phillips and Landry.)

22. Oakland Raiders (*From Dallas via trade)- WR Limas Sweed – Texas – SR 6’4     214 lbs. (With the Raiders owning two first round picks thanks to Dallas, Sweed will provide a great and huge weapon for last year’s # 1 pick QB Jamarcus Russell.)

23. Pittsburgh Steelers – OT Chris Williams – Vanderbilt – SR 6’6      321 lbs. (Considered by many to be the most athletically gifted tackle in the draft, Williams’s stock rose after Pitt’s Jeff Otah had a bad NFL Combine.)

24. Tennessee Titans – WR James Hardy – Indiana – JR 6’6         220 lbs. (Having the best size of any receiver in the draft, Hardy will provide the possession receiver that Vince Young has sorely missed since his Texas days.)

25. Seattle Seahawks – TE Dustin Keller – Purdue – SR 6’3       244 lbs. (Seattle has never had a great pass catching TE and Keller has been the most consistent pass catching TE in college football in the past 2 years. Need anything more?)

26. Jacksonville Jaguars – RB Felix Jones – Arkansas – JR 5’10     210 lbs. (Even though RB Fred Taylor was voted to his first Pro bowl, he isn’t getting any younger. The Jaguars going to the 2 back system will add some burst to Taylor’s legs in the latter part of the season.)

27. San Diego Chargers – OT Gosder Cherilus – Boston College – SR 6’7    315 lbs. (Upgrading an aging O-Line would be the Chargers best bet.)

28. Oakland Raiders (*via trade with Dallas) - DE Lawrence Jackson – USC – SR 6’4     274 lbs. (With the Raiders adding to the O with the 22^nd pick, they quickly select Jackson to improve the D.)  

29. San Francisco 49ers (*via trade with Colts) – WR Devin Thomas – Michigan State – JR 6’2    220 lbs. (With the 49ers lacking any star receivers, Thomas is the best receiver left on the board. He is tall and can run the deep pattern.)

30. Green Bay Packers – TE Fred Davis – USC – SR 6’5        252 lbs. (With Bubba Franks no longer a Packer, TE is a priority if Green Bay doesn’t want to become one dimensional.)

31. New England Cheatriots – (Picked forfeited due to Spy Gate Scandal by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.)

32. New York Giants – LB Dan Conner – Penn State – SR 6’3      233 lbs. (Very versatile linebacker who broke school records at Penn. Could be moved inside and outside. The Giants would love this guy.)
