Clint Longley: The Rise and Fall of the Mad Bomber

Clint Longley.  Does the name ring a bell? It may not if you’re under the age of 30. Because if you’re under 30, you never saw Longley play for the Cowboys, although you may have heard about him. Clint’s career with the Cowboys was brief, but not without heroics, not without drama, and certainly earns him a place as one of the most fascinating players in Cowboy history.

Clint Longley came to the Cowboys in 1974 as a rookie quarterback from Abilene Christian College. Longley quickly earned a reputation for being unpredictable and was maddening for both receivers and defenders alike. Cowboy safety Cliff Harris said, “He looks one way and then throws sidearm in another direction.  In practice, guys pull muscles trying to go where he throws the ball.” Longley earned the nickname “Mad Bomber” when one of his wayward passes smacked Coach Landry’s tower during training camp. Adding further to Longley’s mystique was the fact that his hobby was hunting rattlesnakes in his spare time.

By Thanksgiving Day of 1974, the Cowboys were struggling.  Their record was 6-5 and they were facing the Division leading Redskins on this Turkey Day.  The Boys were flat.  It was one of those rare days when even Staubach didn’t seem to have anything.  A Redskin win would guarantee them a Division Championship.  The Skins had already made a boast that they would knock Staubach out of the game, leaving Dallas with only their rookie quarterback (Longley) – and in the Redskins mind, leaving the Cowboys no chance to win the game.

With 9:57 left to go in the third quarter, the Washington boast regarding Staubach proved prophetic, as he was knocked out of the game from a hit by Dave Robinson of the Redskins.  With the Cowboys trailing the Skins by 16-3, Coach Landry quickly turned to Longley saying, “Clint, you’re in.  Good luck.”

Ummmm.  Redskins, meet the Rookie……

While many fans began to move toward the parking lot and the Redskins began to gloat in an apparent victory, the Mad Bomber took control and proceeded to bomb away.  He completed 12 of 21 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns.  The game winning touchdown was a 50 yard strike to Drew Pearson with less than 30 seconds left. The Redskins had fallen 24-23 to “the Rookie” and a new hero had emerged in Big D.

Unfortunately for Longley, he faded into the background during the next season (1975), although he did start against the Jets in the final regular season game when Staubach was again injured.  Longley came through again, leading the Cowboys to a 31-21 victory.

During training camp in 1976, The tension was palpable as the Cowboys signed Danny White and it appeared that Longley would be relegated to third string due to White’s WFL experience.  After one practice session, Longley made a derogatory remark about Drew Pearson after Pearson dropped one of Longley’s passes.  Staubach told Longley that he was getting tired of him talking about people behind their backs and stated, “Somebody is gonna knock those Bugs Bunny teeth of yours in.”

“Are you going to be the one?” Longley said.

Staubach replied, “Yeah, I’d love to do it.”

Staubach and Longley agreed to meet at a baseball diamond adjacent to the practice field.  By the time assistant coach Dan Reeves arrived to break up the fight, Staubach had Longley pinned beneath him.

Shortly after this, at another practice session, Staubach had his head down and Longley came up and threw a punch.  Staubach was knocked into a set of scales and received a cut that took several stitches to close.  Longley quickly returned to his dorm room, retrieved his bags (which were already packed), caught a ride to the airport, and was gone.   Needless to say, the Cowboy organization traded Longley almost before the doctor could finish stitching up Staubach.

Longley ended up with San Diego for the rest of the ’76 season but eventually drifted away from football and has been reclusive ever since.  He doesn’t grant interviews and talks about his playing days with just a handful of former teammates.  Many have speculated on why Longley punched Staubach, with the most popular answer being that he wanted to be traded Remember that his bags were packed before the punch).  We will probably never know unless Longley decides to break his silence and tell us in his own words.   It’s been 32 years.  I won’t hold my breath for an answer.

Still, it’s an intriguing story in Cowboy history.  A relative unknown becomes an instant hero. Shortly thereafter, he becomes an instant villain by punching Captain America.  In refusing to discuss the incident, he has become a 30 year enigma for those of us fascinated with Cowboy history.

Tony Can't Sing, But Who Cares

Seen this on AOL Fanhouse today. Tony gave the media a reason to make fun of him so its kinda his own fault. Either way, it doesn't matter because we don't really care if he can sing or not, as long as he can call his plays and throw the ball. Hey Tony, its about that time to get re-focused on the reason you're a millionaire, FOOTBALL!

The Cowboy Formerly Known As Number 31

Yes, of course we are referring to the player the media loves to bash, Roy Williams.

For all the negativity Williams seems to get these days, he hasn't allowed it to bring him down one bit. It's as if he really is the "Man of Steel", Superman. Well it turns out that he's actually a big softy... at least when it comes to honoring moms on Mothers Day.

Sports Illustrated ran a great piece that will explain in greater detail what I mean...

Last Mother's Day, 12 single moms from the Dallas area thought they were attending a health fair at the headquarters of Cowboys safety Roy Williams' foundation when two stretch Hummer limos pulled up and shuttled them to a posh mall. There they were greeted by Williams who handed out bouquets of flowers before they were treated to new outfits, shoes and makeovers.

This year Williams is planning something bigger with a spa day, where a group of women will be pampered with manicures and massages while their kids will be having fun at a go-kart racing track.

"Sometimes I can go a little crazy, but it just makes me so happy to see their faces," says Williams. "You have to respect the moms for Mother's Day."

You really have to love a player like Williams who is as selfless and as giving as you can get. It's something you rarely find these days in sports and illustrates just how much character Roy has. Say what you will about his decline in the field last season, his ability off the field is still among the best in the game.

Everyone is so willing to give second chances to the worst characters the NFL has to offer, but are so reluctant to give a second chance to great human beings like Roy Williams. He deserves better from Cowboys fans and that's where I'll leave it.

So in the spirit of the Roy Williams Foundation, we at Lone Star Struck wish all of you moms out there a very Happy Mothers Day!

Is Roy Williams Unfit for Phillips 3-4 Scheme?

Reading an article at Dallas Morning News, I found some news that was a little concerning. Greg Ellis quoted  Roy Williams saying that he doesn't think he fits the defense.

"He said, 'Greg, this defense does not fit me. I don't fit in well with this defense at all,'" Ellis said. "So when he told me that, I was like, 'Well, man, it's still new. Get used to it and it'll probably be fine for you.'" And obviously I think it came to be true. Just like he said, he doesn't fit what's going on here in Dallas right now.

"Now maybe this year, if they decide to keep him for this season, Wade and them will kind of adjust some things to fit him better."

I think we've all noticed the difference in Roy Williams and its not for the good. Is it because of the Wade 3-4 scheme? Who knows, but when you come in and workout and be sure to be out before your teammates arrive it makes people wonder.

With all the Pacman drama and your occasional Romo/Simpson nonsense we certainly don't need to add in-house problems into the mix. Lets just hope the veterans can get their minds focused on the game.

A "Hard" Look at the Cowboys Could Lead to a Triumphant Season

HBO is betting that the Dallas Cowboys will be the team to beat this season, so much so that their cameras will be in training camp to catch all the action as the teams readies itself for the upcoming season.

America will get a glimpse of what it's like to be a part of Cowboys training camp when HBO debuts a new season of "Hard Knocks" The popular series is a behind-the-scenes look at the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of a team preparing for the upcoming season. It will be the second time that the Cowboys will be spotlighted in the series, the first time being in 2002.

I think it’s going to be great to get in close with stars like Terrell Owens, Tony Romo and Jason Witten and just hear their takes on what’s expected to be another exciting season. Most of all I am looking forward to watching how all of the position and roster battles unfold. We will almost be able to get a sense of what these guys go through to make the team and experience their jubilation.

The show will be loaded with plenty of on-the-field footage and locker room interviews that will capture any and all the drama as it unfolds, and tackle all of the issues that the team faces.

By the way, for any of you that enjoys betting on football or just like checking the NFL Odds, what a great way to get some inside information on your favorite team!

Make sure you all tune in to HBO for what’s bound to be another great season of “Hard Knocks”.

Alleged Trigger Man Says, "Pacman Ordered The Hit"

As I stated last week, the signing of Pacman Jones by the Cowboys was going to become a gray cloud hovering over the team all season long. The Titans' headache was now going to become our own burden.

Instead of debating the draft and waxing eloquent on the upcoming season, we are instead over-shadowed by the grim news that Pacman Jones not only was a key player in the shooting that left three victims in a pool of blood, but that he was the one that ordered the hit.

That's according to the alleged shooter Arvin Kenti Edwards who is being held in a Washington state jail on $1 million bail pending extradition to Nevada. He talked with WTVF-TV in Nashville by phone and revealed the most unnerving details about a plot to intentionally go to the strip club and shoot the place up as ordered by Pacman Jones.

Edwards told the TV station in a telephone interview that Jones lied to police about the Feb. 19, 2007, shooting at the strip club that left one employee paralyzed and two other people wounded. Edwards said Jones solicited another hitman for the shooting.

"I want to let them know I'm not the person who did this," Edwards said. "I've been shot before. I know how it feels."

Edwards accused Jones of lying to help his plea deal as Jones tries to return to the NFL.

Pacman Jones received a new contract after being traded by the Tennessee Titans to the Dallas Cowboys last weekend as these new details were already beginning to emerge.

This has now become a story that allegedly charges Pacman Jones with three counts of conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, solicitation, perjury and possibly even more charges.

As of this morning, getting reinstated by the NFL is now a long shot that may never happen, and the very least of Pacman's problems.

Pacman may never get to play one game for the Dallas Cowboys, but he will forever be tied to the organization by his ill advised signing this past month. While the Cowboys seek to win a championship this season, the back pages and the big story may not be the team, but instead the ongoing Pacman drama that is expected to last well into the season and beyond.

Aikman and Novacek Elected to the College Football Hall of Fame

Troy Aikman was one of 15 football players and coaches elected to the College Football Hall of Fame today. The former quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys retired from football on April 19, 2001. That same year he became a commentator for Fox Sports and has become a familiar voice in homes of football fans across the nation.

Troy Aikman was born in California but his family moved to Henryetta, Oklahoma when he was 12 years old. He attended the University of Oklahoma from 1984-85 and then transferred to UCLA. During his junior and senior years, Troy lead the team to a 20-4 record. He finished third to receive the 1988 Heisman trophy. His last collegiate game, coincidently, was at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas and they won 17-3 over Arizona. The media went crazy over Aikman, boasting him as the "Next Quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys". Aikman was taken by the Dallas Cowboys as the first pick in the first round of the 1989 NFL Draft.

Aikman was honored in 2005 when he and former teammates Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin were inducted into the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor. The "triplets'" led the Cowboys to win 3 Super Bowls in 4 years during the 90s. Aikman holds the record for most wins in a decade with 90 wins. On August 5, 2006 he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Congratulations to our beloved Troy Aikman!

Tight End Pro Bowler Jay Novacek was also inducted into the College Hall of Fame Thursday. Novacek played college ball at Wyoming where he set records as an All-American football player and also competed in track and field.

Novacek was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1985 and he remained there for 5 years before joining the Dallas Cowboys. He played for the Cowboys for '90-'96 before retiring because of a lingering back injury. He was elected to the Pro-Bowl 5 consecutive times and also accumulated 3 Super Bowl Rings in the 90s.

Jay Novacek currently owns a hunting ranch in Nebraska and does commercial work and charity events. You may also hear Jay from time to time commentating NFL games.

Way to go Jay, you deserve it!

Hat tip to Sarah for the info!
