Maybe, just maybe, I am the only Cowboys fan looking at this? And a little concerned.
I thought that the QB position in Dallas was set? Then a couple of weeks ago I read that Cowboys coaches are not sure about Brad Johnson being the Cowboys backup QB. Hmmm... then I read more. Apparently Johnson is not able to make certain throws in the offense, particularly the 10 yard out routes. Johnson who is over 40 was supposed to be the answer to the backup QB spot.
Around the same time I hear that the Cowboys are interested in trading for Chris Simms from the Buccaneers. Just yesterday (Wednesday) I hear that if the Buccaneers lower their asking price to a 4th round pick in the 2009 draft then the Cowboys would trade for him. To me it does not sound like the Cowboys are set at the QB position aside from Tony Romo being the starter.
Not trying to beat a dead horse, yesterday I read that Richard Bartel who was on the practice squad all of last year, was struggling in practice. Now I maybe being a little rough on our management but to me what did they see in Bartel that would make them choose him over Matt Moore? But that is neither hear nor there.
So if Johnson's arm is not strong enough to make the out route throws and Bartel is struggling in camp, then in my mind the Cowboys are most definitely looking for a backup QB. Simms may be one back-up to look at. But I throw this out to you the Cowboys fans. What is the solution in Dallas for a back-up QB?
And remember the stars are bright late at night... deep in the heart of Texas!!!
This has been an exciting week for fans and players! For us fans, we are finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. Pre-Season is almost here! If you're like me, it can't come soon enough! News about players is coming in at lightning speed. It's enough to make our heads spin!
The players had an earth moving experience yesterday. As soon as I got word, I scrambled for a television or radio to get the latest updates. Of course, at the office, my access to the outside world is limited. I got scattered information until I got home from work. My first stop was the television - the news was on! I had to know my favorite players were okay!
As it turns out, it was a mild quake about a hundred miles from their location. That doesn't change the fact that an earthquake can be a spooky experience, especially if you have never felt the earth move before! By their reactions, I could tell that it was a first for many. It can be an unnerving experience to say the least! I mean, the ground should not move, right? Thankfully, the team was fine. I was pleased to see them cracking jokes and remaining focused.
On the fan-front, the Cowboys have opened their online membership to the True Blue Fan Club to everyone. They are encouraging fans to share their photos and favorite memories of Texas Stadium. It is a really cool site with tons of things to see and do! I would like to encourage you to check it out. If you are moved to share your pictures or thoughts in a blog, it is free! Share your username with me so I can support what you post! My username is: TxShelbyTx - you can find me by searching Fan Profiles. Be sure to read my blog! You're sure to get a kick out of it! Admin changed the title of my blog and I was so pleased with what they did! Here's the link: True Blue Fan Club
Based on what I'm seeing, I get the feeling that the Cowboys are setting the stage for something fantastic to celebrate the end of an era. This could be a rare opportunity for fans around the world to be involved! Don't miss your chance, okay!?
I tend to get long winded as the season gets closer and I don't want to wear you out before we even get started. I'm going to close out here with a big THANK YOU to Chuck. Chuck made my day after I announced that my blog at the True Blue Fan Club had been featured. He called me, "America's Fan for America's Team." I would like for Chuck to know that those kind words rank high in my favorite moments as a fan! It sits high on the chart with 2007 Dr. Pepper Ultimate Fan and the minutes I spent on the field during a game in 2006! Moments I will never forget and cherish forever!
Ya'll have a great week! I will see you next Wednesday! GO COWBOYS!! Shelby
Injury Update: Terence Newman Out For At Least Three Weeks
The Cowboys announced that Terence Newman will miss at least three weeks due to a slight groin strain.
Initially the thoughts were he would miss 2-3 practices after Newman was injured Monday during a play. Newman got an MRI Tuesday and it revealed he had a strain.
It's like deja vu all over again. Newman missed three preseason games last season and the first two regular season games.
The Cowboys top corner will miss the preseason opener against San Diego and possibly the second game in Denver.
Adam Jones and Mike Jenkins will fill Newman's shoes while he recovers.
5. Wade Phillips, Dallas: It is tough to say that Phillips needs to win the Super Bowl or pack his bags but that may be true. This team was built by Bill Parcells and fans are expecting a lot. Phillips finished 13-3 last year. Now everyone wants a ring.
Of course, I don't agree with the list. I understand Tony Sparano, former member of the Cowboys coaching staff, making the list but why Jim Zorn? Jim Zorn inherited the Washington Redskins from Joe Gibbs when Gibbs retired after last season. Why is he of interest to anyone?
But then again, intriguing doesn't always mean great. Actually, it means curiously interesting, which could be in a negative or positive way.
Either way, I have confidence in Wade to get our team to the championship. I really like his style of coaching and I honestly believe the players are behind him 100%. Of course there will be a change of heart if the Cowboys don't go all the way... but I don't think we have to worry about that Cowboys fans!
I just heard on 103.3 ESPN radio that there was a pretty huge earthquake felt at the Cowboys Training Camp. Reports are saying there were no injuries reported thus far, but some are shaking up from the ordeal.
I myself believe this Quake is due to the massive amount of weight from the offensive and defensive line. :)
Cowboys are letting the L.A. area know they are there!
Your Time To Chime
I'm gonna switch gears this week. I'm sure everyone has been keeping up to date with all the things going on in Training Camp - the injuries, whose getting the best of who, and how the newbies are doing.
I have lingering issues on a few key topics that have been put on the back burner due to the excitement of TC. I would like for you, the masses, to chime in on these issues and give your opinion with mine.
My first issue is this ongoing speculation that Jason Garrett will be replacing Phillips after this season regardless of a Super Bowl win.
Some are reporting that Phillips is the head coach for the primary fact of getting Garrett ready to launch.
Others report that if he wins a playoff game then he will stay.
I can understand that reporters will throw anything out there to have a story to write about, but MAN! This has got to weigh heavy on Phillip's mind.
I can see these things coming up like over halfway through the season if there losing, but at least give the man a chance to redeem himself.
These things should not even be brought up this early into Training Camp.
Some people look at the coaching staff and assume that the moves that were made were made around Garrett. Wade didn't bring them in. So therefore Wade is gone after this year. It's got me puzzled.
I feel that the players have a good chemistry with Phillips. I haven't seen nor heard of any ill will toward him at all!
Maybe this is the way to win a Super Bowl. Hold the coaches job over his head and he will produce. Hey It worked for the Giants!
Let me know your thoughts and opinions on this issue. Could it Happen? Could it Not?
I was having a horrible day at work, just one of those days. I'm sure everyone can relate. On my lunch break I decided to stop into the music/book store and possibly find something to lift my spirits, or at least distract me.
Surprisingly, I couldn't find any new music that I couldn't live without. I wandered through the store as if I was lost, not knowing what I was there for. I made my way through the video games, movies, books and ended up back in the front of the store to the corner where all of the magazines are kept.
Suddenly my eyes opened wide and I smiled. There he was, Tony Romo on the cover of, not one, not two but three magazines in the front row. Fantasy Football magazines nonetheless. Our celebrity quarterback is becoming a regular in the media spotlight and a household name as well. I'm so proud!
Thanks Tony for saving my day. I'm sure my co-workers are happy that I came back to work with a different perspective and a smile on my face. Oh, and yes I purchased two of those magazines, I'll be sure to get back with ya'll on the interesting details.
Newman Will Be Fine, If Not We Have Backup This Time
Many people worry when they hear the name Terence Newman and injury in the same sentence. Can't say that I blame them, he missed the first three games last year because of problems with his foot. However, Newman came back and had an excellent season, earning his first trip to the Pro Bowl and later getting a nice extension for six-year, $50.2 million.
T-New was injured yesterday during morning practice when, according to Coach Phillips, he "got tangled up with a receiver during a play and twisted his leg awkwardly". The team doesn't seem to be worried and the media isn't freaking out, so I think it's safe to say he is okay. He didn't participate in the afternoon practice but he was there for observation.
The team will most likely have Newman sit out Tuesday's practice and likely get the groin injury further examined just to play it safe.
While he's out, some of the younger cornerbacks will see more field time. Rookie Mike Jenkins took Newman's place on the first team. Jenkins has looked very good in camp so far.
The Cowboys ability to acquire several CBs this year certainly helps when you have an injury to one of your starters. When both starters went down last season, it was a nightmare. Even though you hate to lose a starter under any circumstances, this time we're ready.
Not to anyone's surprise, but Terrell Owens has been the most impressive Cowboy at camp thus far. Owens continued to sweep past the defense catching deep passes, often lined up against Adam Jones. The two have definitely formed a friendly competition and so far Owens is ahead.
"Every day is going to be different, depending on the feel of each individual. Some days he will feel a little better than me and the majority of the days I will feel a little better than him." -Terrell Owens on Adam Jones
"I think I'm the best. He thinks he's the best, so that will make us better. I know on Sunday my job will be a whole lot easier," Jones said. "It helps me a lot. T.O. is a world-class athlete. ... I'm enjoying myself and I'm getting better every day." -Adam Jones on Terrell Owens
Both Owens and Jones are very confident, and competing with one another will only help the team. When you've got the best of the best that are always striving to outdo one another. The outcome can only lead to another great season and hopefully a Super Bowl title when it's all over.
Hey guys, I'd like to introduce Mike Mosh. Lone Star Struck will be featuring Cowboys commentary, trash talk, and more from our friend Mike this season.
Mike has an impressive inventory of jerseys at his Dallas Shop and he's loaded up for the new season. He has current and former players, rookies and hall of famers.
To get any Cowboys jersey - any number, any name - give Mike a shout! If you want it he has it, if he doesn't he can get it!
Will Patrick Crayton and Sam Hurd Answer The call?
With the news of Terry Glenn being released... a move that I applauded, it now falls on our young receivers to step up and fill the void left by his absence. Most notably, Sam Hurd and Patrick Crayton.
Let's first look at a short synopsis on each player.
Patrick Crayton - After spending his first three seasons as the club's primary punt returner and as a reserve wide receiver, Crayton had the opportunity to showcase his talents on a full time basis in 2007, because of injuries to Terry Glenn who missed the first 15 games of the season. Crayton filled in admirably as the team's second receiver position but was unspectacular. He finished with career highs with 50 receptions, 697 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns and 187 of those yards, came in one game against the St. Louis Rams.
Sam Hurd - Hurd was the third receiver for most of the season and finished the year with 19 catches for 314 yards, both career-highs, and his first career touchdown reception. He had three catches and season best 64 yards in the last game of the season against the Redskins.
When you take away Hurd's and Crayton's best games of the season, you are left with numbers that are dreadfully underwhelming at best. This season will be their wakeup call. It will be the signature moment that will define the rest of their careers.
Should niether of them answer the call, the Cowboys still have other viable options in Miles Austin and Isaiah Stanback. For now, they are slotted to spend most of their time on special teams, but may be pressed into starting duty if Hurd and Crayton fail to deliver in the early goings.
The Cowboys will give Hurd and Crayton plenty of leeway during the first few games of the season. But if the team falters because of the excess double and triple coverage on Terrell Owens, they won't hesitate to make a change to the depth chart.
I have high hopes for Hurd, and I believe he may surpass Crayton as the number two receiver before long. I also see a bright future for Stanback as well. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out, and even more interesting to see if Jerry Jones brings someone new into the picture which is always a possibility.
I was reading the Dallas Morning News blog as they did live updates to what was happening during this mornings practice.
I am not too concerned about Stanback. We already know he is Jerry's pet project and it probably won't be until next year that we see his true potential. He dropped a pass as it clanked up against his chest. He then turned around and caught a 50 yard pass from Richard Bartel.
Adam Jones is having a pretty good camp so far. He has done very well covering the receivers, but has been thrown against and the receivers do catch some against him. I don't think they are expecting perfection from him. He had a pass knock down this morning. It would have been an interception, but Mike Jefferson knocked it out of his hands.
Danny Amendola has been impressive in camp to this point. He has good cuts and gets excellent separation. He isn't fast, but he is working hard to make it on this team. I do hope he makes it. He may be battling Mike Jefferson for the final roster wide receiver spot.
Jay Ratliff got in at defensive end with Tank Johnson played nose tackle. At that time Ratliff and Columbo got in a small scuffle. I think we are going to have a beast of a defensive line. It was even said that Spears had a good session in the 11-on-11 drills in the passing and running plays.
The starting inside linebackers will probably be Zach Thomas and Bradie James. What is interesting is that Bobby Carpenter has been playing third string. Kevin Burnett and Justin Rogers have been play second string. I am not sure about Carpenter being on this team, but still have a full training camp to go through.
Yesterday, Roy got burned pretty bad and fell on his face in coverage. But he did have a few pass knock downs.
Tony Curtis and Martellus Bennett have been splitting reps as the number two tight end.
The Cowboys agreed to terms with running back Felix Jones and
cornerback Mike Jenkins on Friday night. Todd Archer reports that both
players agreed to five-year deals and the team hopes to have them in
camp in time for Saturday's afternoon practice.
All draft picks are signed and the Cowboys are ready to rock!
Jerry Just Told The Media, Terry Glenn Has Been Waived
The Terry Glenn saga is over. His tenure with the team is over as well.
The Cowboys have released the veteran wide receiver, team owner Jerry
Jones announced during Friday's afternoon practice here at training
camp in Oxnard, Calif.
Jones said he met with Glenn and his agent, Jim Gould over the last few
days, including conversations on Friday in attempt to figure out the
best solution.
"We've been working for weeks with Terry's representative, looking
at how might structure something, as it pertains to the preseason, as
well as going into the season," Jones said. "At the end of the day,
we're waiving Terry this afternoon. We're going on down the road and
seeing where we are."
ESPN Reports Terry Glenn Has Agreed To Split Contract
After months of uncertainty, it appears we will finally get a resolution on the Terry Glenn situation, as team owner Jerry Jones announced on Thursday.
However, there are conflicting reports as to what will actually take place here today, either before, after or maybe even during the Cowboys' first practice, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. (PDT) here in Oxnard.
Hopefully Training Camp Will Answer Any Remaining Questions
Hello Cowboys fans! 2008 season is just about under way, and I know everyone is as excited as I am. Training camp is here!
Thank you Star Struck, for making this off-season very easy to take with the all great commentary and graphics!!
Well, before the start of every season every team in the NFL has questions or need answers to questions about their teams. The common questions that a lot of sports writers and football analysts have about the Dallas Cowboys are at the wide receiver and the corner back positions. I understand the receiver questions, but I think that the cornerback position has already been addressed and answered in the off-season.
I raise another need or question to you instead, as Cowboys faithful, what about the tight end position? I know, I know you are thinking we have one of the best, if not the best tight ends in football. I agree Jason Witten is a very good tight end, but whom do we have if he goes down with an injury? Knock on wood (My Head) and just pray that he does not get hurt. In the off season, the Cowboys traded away Anthony Fasano who I believe was much more than a qualified back up. He probably would be a starter just about any team in the NFL.
Tony Curtis who has been with the Cowboys for three seasons, seems to be the most qualified at being Witten's back up. But still, with having just three years experience... what do we really know about Tony Curtis?
Will Martellus Bennett, the rookie out of Texas A&M, be able to get the offense down in time? He had some trouble during the OTA's and the mini camps with the Cowboys offense.
Then there is also Drew Atchison and Rodney Hannah, who both are un-drafted and not even a lock to make the team.
Well I'd love to hear what some of your opinions are. Let me know what you think. And always remember the star shines bright late at night... deep in the heart of Texas! Take care and never stop Believing!
I thought I would introduce myself to everyone. My name is Dave and have been a lifelong fan of the Cowboys since 1976! I try my best to keep up on the news on the Cowboys and I feel that the Cowboys are on their way to their sixth Super Bowl!!
I am in the Air Force, but will be retiring in 3 months! I look forward to it!!
I will try and bring you news of the Cowboys as I get it! I do work all day, but I will do my best to post it for you!
Training camp is here! Pre-season kicks off on August 9th...
I was just sitting around thinking about the new season. We have so many exciting rookies in camp. I think the wide receiver corps is going to be the most fun to watch. As I looked over the roster I saw that we have four rookie wide receivers competing for a job this pre season. Then of course, we have Terrell Owens, Terry Glenn (I think?), Patrick Crayton, Sam Hurd, a healthy Isaiah Stanback, and finally Miles Austin, who by the way, showed off some amazing skills in mini camp.
The new kids on the block are rookie Danny Amendola, Mark Bradford, Mike Jefferson, and Daniel Polk. So it will be very interesting to see if any of them will be able to play on the opposite side of Terrell Owens, maybe even rise to his level of play? Okay, maybe "almost" to his level!
On a side note... Adam Jones will be interesting to watch just because we have heard so much about the guy. I have seen him play with Tennessee and he was great but, now I have to see him play like that with a star on his helmet before deciding if he's a keeper.
Who do you most want to see play in training camp? What do you think about the rookie wide receivers in camp? Come on guys, speak up and comment!
"I've paid my dues.. Time after time. I've done my sentence... But committed no crime. And bad mistakes... I've made a few. I've had my share of sand kicked in my face, but I've come through."
"But it's been no bed of roses... No pleasure cruise. I consider it a challenge before the whole human race, And I ain't gonna lose."
What a way to open up a new season... I prefaced this post with some well know lyrics from what has become a cult favorite among stadium songs. I couldn't post the refrain of that song... not yet. That will come on February 1st, 2009 from Tampa, Florida, the site of this season's Super Bowl. That will be the day we post the full lyrics to "We Are The Champions".
I wanted to open this article by stirring your inner emotions. Emotions that have been asleep for far too long this off season. It's time to revive ourselves and dive into a new season of Dallas Cowboys football. A season that will be long on hope and promise... a season that will trump the bad taste of the last two season finishes... a season that will be etched in silver on the Vince Lombardi Trophy in 2009.
We can spend the next 100 words talking about the holes in the lineup and the problems this team faces as they open training camp today. We can talk about all the controversies and the all the dramas too. But I am not going to ruin this moment by going into all of that right now... there will be time for that later on. Lets just share in the excitement and joy and optimism of a new season and a new opportunity to embark on a hard-fought journey and a memorable season sprinkled with thrills and elation.
Training camp opens today. Shout it from the rooftops and spread the news. Football is back!
As the new dawn of a new season approaches, the 2008 Boys are thankfully faced with very few question marks. There is the ongoing Terry Glenn fiasco, which I don't really understand, because if TG really wants to be on this team, then what is 700 grand to a multimillionare (the difference between his salary and his injury settlement)? And that is ONLY if he does get hurt. TD to Terry: sign the dang paper! The receiving corps is the standard question mark thrown about in the media, and understandably so, but I have enjoyed watching the development of Patrick Crayton and Sam Hurd, and I think they are going to be consistent enough to offset any double coverage on TO. I also remind everyone not to forget that Jason Witten is the true number 2 receiver (number one if you go by receptions).
That being said, the other big question mark is the secondary. It has a little bit of a new twist this year in that we actually have a surplus of DB's for the 4 to 5 spots back there. The candidates are highly paid and highly controversial. A rundown and a personal, unprofessional scouting report:
The Godfather: Roy Williams - 7th year - Oklahoma. The often criticized Roy has gone from the most popular Cowboy to the most maligned. Whether it is due to weight gain, lost confidence or even putting his faith and religion over football (as some have suggested), Roy has lost a big step and is very vulnerable to tattoed tight ends and deep bombs over the middle.
The Natural: Terence Newman - 6th year - Kansas State. T-New became another member of the secondary to cash in on a huge contract and bonus. The interception totals won't make your heart flutter (16 for his career) but he is a true shutdown corner with speed. A team leader and well respected across the league. Will start every game as long as he is healthy for the next 5 to 7 years.
The Beast: Anthony Henry - 8th year - South Florida. Henry is a big, physical corner who is solid in the run game and the pass game. Injury prone in his first 2 years here, but when he is on the field, he has shown to be a playmaker with a knack for the football. He was given a huge deal in free agency and has shown to be worth the investment to this point. He needs to stay healthy and not get frustrated by any possible positional changes to continue to live up to the deal.
Mr. Consistent: Ken Hamlin - 6th year - Arkansas. Hamlin was left on the trash heap for any team to have prior to last season. The Cowboys signed him to a one year deal and he turned that into a Pro Bowl season and a brand spankin new 6 year, 39 million dollar deal. He will anchor the secondary and play more of a hybrid free safety/strong safety role in the Phillips 3-4 this year.
The Wild Card: Adam "Pac-Man" Jones - 3rd year - West Virginia. Oh, everyone knows the story, but as the 6th overall pick in the 2005 draft, no one questions the talent. If he can stay focused on football and stay away from the strip clubs and Hennessey, the Cowboys will have arguably the best group of cornerbacks in the entire NFL. Stay tuned.
The Rook: Mike Jenkins - 1st year - South Florida. Jenkins will be paid as a late first round pick that he was so the staff will likely look to get him on the field. He was a big part of a great season for the South Florida Bulls who rose as high as Number 2 in the nation last year. Projected as a higher pick than he was and Cowboys traded up to get him. Great speed and agility. Bright future in the league, but still a rookie and will most likely not be left on an island against any seasoned NFL receivers.
So now that we know the pieces to the puzzle, we should look at the puzzle itself. There has been great conjecture from the media and the fans alike that Roy will be cut in a salary cap move. I am not going to sit here and say that it absolutely will not happen, I just see it as very unlikely. Primarily due to depth and injury concerns. Ask yourself one simple question, would you rather have too many or not enough? The base defense will most likely have Hamlin (FS), Williams (SS), and Henry and Newman. Simple enough, no breaking news there. The questions begin when you factor in how well Pacma...oops, Adam Jones performs in camp and if/when he is reinstated, and of course injuries as well as matchups. I would suggest, in my humble opinon, we get Henry some reps at free safety during camp and when we play a team like Cleveland with a prolific passing attack for example, have Henry back at free safety and bring in Adam Jones and Mike Jenkins in at corner and nickel back, respectively. When we play a team like Philadelphia or San Francisco, teams with a west coast offense and not much of a deep passing game, keep Roy in there with his physical presence and intimidation factor, and put Jones in at the nickel in passing situations. That is as long as Jones doesn't beat out Henry for the starting cornerback job.....whew. I am tired after all that. The bottom line is Jerry Jones has paid all of the DB's alot of money and they will be a huge part of our ultimate success. To whom much is given, much is expected.
All I know is that I personally would rather have too much than not enough!
It should be a great season.....camp kicks off tomorrow and then the first practice is on Friday.
The Cowboys locked up two more players today. Tashard Choice and Erik Walden both signed 4-year contracts. The exact terms are yet to be released.
Running back Tashard Choice was drafted in the 4th round this year. He had turned some heads during minicamps. Expect to see alot of him in Training Camp and Preseason games. Some believe he will pass Felix Jones and become the backup RB. Only time will tell.
Linebacker Erik Walden, 6th round draft pick, was a surprise from the get-go. The Cowboys are stacked with linebackers so its obvious he was taken to be developed for the future. At the same time, he may not even make the team.
Interestingly enough, Dallas has not agreed to terms with their first three draft picks, Felix Jones, Mike Jenkins and Martellus Bennett.
"Captain Comeback" Sees A Championship For The Cowboys This Season
As I made my daily trip to the new and improved dallascowboys.com this morning, I had a nice surprise waiting for me courtesy of Rob Phillips, one of their best staff writers.
Rob, had a posted a great article in which he talks to Roger Staubach and rehashes the wonderful memories of his glory days including the famous "Hail Mary" catch and of course the amazing string of 23 fourth quarter comebacks. Wow!
Among the questions Staubach was asked, I was most impressed with his answer regarding the current team. He believes that championships happen by earning certain levels or stages... sort of like taking baby steps. It don't just happen unless you have some failures first.
"I see the strides they've made. Last year, you look at that Giants game, the drive right before the half . . . It's almost like you earn your next plateau. This team is deserving of being a championship team this year, and they could've last year with a 13-3 record."
"Sometimes it takes a little time. This team's got the talent. I think they've got the attitude, I think they've got the leadership now on both offense and defense with (Ken) Hamlin, Bradie James or DeMarcus (Ware). And (Tony) Romo, he's the real deal. He can make things happen, and he seems like he's really possessed this year to make it happen."
"They've got the players to do it. I don't want to jinx them or anything, but I'm hoping for and I think they're going to have a really good year."
I know we all believe in our team and I guess that's just part of being a fan, but when you hear such high praise and glowing remarks from someone whose actually been there and achieved the ultimate prize, it's just invigorating to hear.
Thanks for the memories Captain Comeback; thanks for the encouragement and optimism too!
Yup, that's right ladies and gentlemen. I have risen out of the nasty stench left behind from our 'Boys 2007 season exit. Sorry for the long absence. It has taken me seven months to digest the playoff loss and pass it like some bad fish at a cheap sushi bar!
I'm feeling better now!
I'm ready to get pumped up for this upcoming season!!
So I take back what I said!...Everyone get back up outta those seats, pump your fists, raise the roof, and get ready for another Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl Run! Time to 'Unleash The Beast'! They're not gonna know what hit 'em!
Training Camp 2008
Training Camp is just three days away. Players are preparing to leave, reporters are setting up shop, and Oxnard, CA. is on "High Alert" because of a Dallas Cowboys invasion. I'm so happy for the fans in that area to get another chance to witness history. San Antonio was supposed to have us locked up for a few years, but certain circumstance kept that from happening.
So glad for you all!
You have been blessed with not only the opportunity to see the greatest team in the NFL preparing for the upcoming season, but the opportunity to witness history in the making.
The Cowboys are preparing to enter their final season at Texas Stadium and there's a strong desire to enter this season with Super Bowl hopes. For a lot of people out there its Super Bowl or Bust.
Not mad at ya a bit!
What better way to enter a new home then to have the proper pillar in the foundation. That proper pillar is the soon to be sixth Lombardi trophy. With the talent that we have locked up, there's no other reason not to think this team will go all the way.
The Cowboys have made some moves, and locked up key guys that can dominate this league for many years to come. The pursuit of perfection and urgency is held so high in the air, it is bound to smack fear into all opposing teams that stand in our way. This is our year... our time.
I'll be watching Hard Knocks. I'll be watching for you Oxnard fans to represent with class and embrace the moment. We Are America's Team!
Hold up some "HI CHUCK" posters for me! Ha Ha
What Are Some Of Your Expectations For Training Camp?
I would like to ask you all to let me know what you would like to see addressed in training camp. Me personally, I would like to see special teams addressed the most.
If Adam Jones gets reinstated, I'm eager to see the return game improve. Having a good return can take the edge off of a two or three score lead early in the 4th quarter with us trailing. I would like to see a long touchdown return and make it easier for the offense to come back in that situation. (hence the Patsies game last year.) I'm sure we will have those games. We always do!
Also...
Rest The Vets!
Get the younger guys primed and ready. There's no reason to push these 6 + year guys to the breaking point. One-a-days are enough for these guys (unless willing), but the main focus needs to be keeping these guys healthy.
It's a long season, and with the Terry Glenn saga still continuing, backup QB doubts, and a young receiving corps (Minus T.O.), we are only one injury away from worry.
I have faith in the coaching staff and the organization to make the right decisions to get this team ready to get started on the right foot.
Jeremy Shockey got his ass and his big mouth traded to New Orleans for a bag of chips and a some Cajun-style shrimp. For years, Cowboys fans have known that Shockey was all talk and no action, and finally the Giants figured that out. Good riddance from the NFC east!
Kevin Boss will now take over as the Giants' starting tight end and drop the word backup from his designation. I guess he showed Shockey who was Boss!
Wide Receiver, Plaxico Burress is still trying to figure out if he will hold out of training camp which starts this week. Take your time Plaxico, no rush...
Philadelphia Eagles - pronunciation (SEE-gulls)
QB Donovan McNabb says that his shoulder is fine, but does anybody really care anymore? I mean this guy spends more time in an emergency room than those broken down coffee machines that never seem to work, and when they do the coffee's sucks and you end up burning your tongue. Blah... Isn't it ironic how right Terrell Owens was about this guy?
RB Brain Westbrook still doesn't know if he'll hold out at training camp either. He's a punk ass, and you can bet the farm that he'll be there to collect his first check on Friday.
The Eagles have practically finished signing all of their draft picks. A lot of good they will do them.
Washington Redskins - pronunciation (ded-skinz)
The Redskins acquired DE Jason Taylor from the Dolphins in exchange for a second-round draft choice in 2009 and a sixth-round pick in 2010. I'd be quaking in my Cowboys boots if this happened in 2002, but come on everybody, Taylor is 34 years old and it's been six years since his huge 19 sack season. Next subject...
When you consider the fact that this past week, the Redskins lost defensive ends Phillip Daniels (torn ACL) and Alex Buzbee (ruptured Achilles) for the rest of the season, the Taylor acquisition is more like running in place than moving forward.
See you again after training camp all you 'Boys fans!
With less than a week until Training Camp kicks off, this should be our last quiet week for a while. The Cowboys had a good week overall.
They inked their 5th round draft pick, cornerback Orlando Scandrick to a four-year, $1.85 million deal on Friday, that includes a $185,000 signing bonus.
Ken Hamlin received a long term deal, insuring he will be with Dallas for the remainder of his career. He signed a six-year, $39 million contract. The deal contains $15 million guaranteed, including a $9 million signing bonus.
It's been a great offseason for the Cowboys. They've locked up valuable players and acquired some nice additions to the roster.
I'm extremely excited about Training Camp and Preseason football. It will be interesting seeing who makes the team and who has to turn in their jersey this year.

In case you hadn't heard, Cowboys fans will be able to check out their favorite men in silver and blue on HBO's Hard Knocks series during training camp. The series premieres Tuesday, August 6th. You can actually go to HBO's website and submit a question to a Cowboy and view the teaser trailer.
Hey Cowboys fans.... ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?!
Howdy Ya'll! I hope this message finds you all well and getting excited about the season. There's a lot going on. Not just on the practice fields but with fans as well! We have every reason to celebrate! Our Boys look good. This is the last season at Texas Stadium. If you follow this site at all, you know countless reasons to let the fun begin!
The future is SO BRIGHT - I gotta hear shades!
I am hearing rumors of fans making arrangements to visit from out of town, plans for tailgate parties and such! Thanks for keeping me in the loop! I love me some COWBOYS and I LOVE COWBOY FANS! The 2009 changes in location will also cause some changes in parking and tailgating THIS SEASON. According to The Tailgating Policy, these activities will be in a designated areas given out on a first come - first serve basis. You may occupy as many spaces as you have passes. It looks like they plan to get real serious about this policy.
We got lucky several years ago: found season tickets! You would have thought I won the lottery! Like all Season Ticket Holders, I find myself on the eve of a deadline to commit to tickets in 2009 and for the next 30 yrs. Next season's move to Arlington weighs heavy on our hearts, minds and wallets. I'm a fan (fanatic?) and all -this is no doubt, right? My heart says, "Jump Jump!" My commitment-phobic side says, "Hold on now... let's think about this!" If you have your 2009 tickets, CONGRATS! Please share the secret that helped you come to that decision! Current Season Ticket-holders have until Friday. We are still thinking about it with sweaty palms and a nervous twitch.
On a happier note, our 2008 season tickets arrived. They are COOL! The ticket for the last game is twice the normal size. The ticket and the parking pass says "Farewell". It is real neat and it makes me wonder what they have planned, ya know? I am excited to be a part of the changes we have ahead of us. Which, of course, brings my thoughts back to the 2009 season. *sigh* What to do - what to do?
As the season gets closer and closer, I'm getting more and more excited. Can you feel the star-shaped butterflies in your belly? Fans will be about to burst when we finally have a home game! With our schedule, it is sure to start off action packed. As fans, we need to be LOUD for the DEFENSE and as quiet as mice for the offense. Spread the word! Our Fan Game Plan is that simple!
As T.O. would say, "Get Your Popcorn Ready!" We are in for a fun ride, fans!
The Dallas Cowboys and Ken Hamlin have come to an agreement on a long term deal. The franchise player will receive $39 million over 6 years. Hamlin excelled last season with 62 tackles (45 solo) and 5 interceptions earning his first trip to the Pro Bowl.
The 27-year old safety began is career in Seattle. He was drafted in the 2nd Round, 42nd overall in the 2003 Draft. After an off-the-field altercation in October 2005, Hamlin was left with a serious head injury and had to watch the remaining games from the sideline.
In March 2007 the Cowboys signed Hamlin to a one-year $2.5 million deal. Following the season, he was tagged the franchise player.
Jerry Jones and Ken Hamlin's agent have gone back and forth with negotiations this off-season. With only hours until the deadline, they finally reached an agreement.
Hamlin has not attended any mini camps, practices, or workouts with the team yet. With training camp only 9 days away, he can now join his team and focus on football.
Ken Hamlin is now a Cowboy for life! Congratulations #26!
The clock keeps ticking on negotiations between the Dallas Cowboys and safety Ken Hamlin.
Both sides have until 3:00 PM (CDT) to hammer out a deal and get something done. The fact that it has taken so long and come to this has been pretty frustrating for me personally because I'm a big Ken Hamlin fan. He had a fine season for us and earned his first trip to the Pro Bowl. His hard-hitting style and his ability to get great reads made him exciting to watch. The declining skills of Roy Williams were easier to absorb because of Hamlin. We need him to show up to training camp happy and with a good attitude.
I urge Jerry Jones to do what he can to sign Hamlin now before time runs out and the team is forced to suspend any further negotiations until AFTER the upcoming season. Once the deadline passes, Hamlin will have to play this season for the one-year, $4.396 million tender he will receive for being tabbed as a franchise player. After that, he becomes a free agent.
Hamlin has not participated in any of the team's off-season practices and mini-camps.
Hopefully, we'll get some good news on this front by the end of the day. What ever happens, he'll still be a Cowboy and of course that's good, but I would rather that he does not return as a disgruntled player.
This past Sunday, Tony Romo was featured on ESPN's Sunday Conversation. He discussed a variety of topics that included his two playoff losses, his celebrity status, teammates Terrell Owens and Adam Jones and some of the choices he's made since becoming the Cowboys quarterback.
It's amazing how negative the twists are not only in the introduction to the interview, but also the line of questioning as well. (Leave it to ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports propaganda!)
Luckily for us, Tony Romo is a stand up guy who knows how to defend himself without appearing to be defensive. As you watch the video, take note of how each question is geared to illicit a news-breaking comment. I was impressed with how Romo managed to get his points across without being caught in their lair.
It's a shame that they couldn't get Tony Romo to open up about what his goals are for the upcoming season, and some of the things he would like to improve on as an NFL quarterback. I believe most football fans would have loved to hear his responses to those questions instead. That being said, it's still a cool video because we get to see Tony Romo talk about the Cowboys!
Dallas Cowboys linebacker Bobby Carpenter gets philosophical about the Cowboys and then talks about his alma mater, his latest music video, and of course his new nickname!
Here is another exclusive Lone Star Struck video. This one comes courtesy of ESPN's First take where the topic of discussion is a recent coaches poll.
The coaches were asked which current Pro Bowl caliber player would you NOT want on your playoff team? The winner... or loser... is Terrell Owens. Ugh... One of the reasons they cite is his playoff record of 1-6. Check it out...
If you didn't recognize him, the man on the right is none other than "Cowboys #1 Hater" Skip Bayless.
According to his profile on wikipedia.com:
Bayless also has focused his criticism on the Dallas Cowboys, now that they have his most frequent target, Terrell Owens, whom he calls "Team Obliterator." He also has blasted quarterback Tony Romo ("Tony Romeo") for participating in a highly-publicized romance with Jessica Simpson before proving himself as an NFL quarterback.
This week, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver, Patrick Crayton made an appearance on ESPN's First Take and discussed his take on many things including comments he made about the Giants which they said gave them extra motivation to beat the Cowboys. He also talks about Tony Romo, the O-Line, and what we can expect in the upcoming season. In a funny moment, he also admits that Terrell Owens has a weird fascination with Volkswagen Beetle. I cut this video exclusively for Lone Star Struck and I hope you enjoy it!
This season Lone Star Struck will be premiering some new features including streaming videos, live game chats, contests, and more. This is the first of many videos you will see in the coming weeks. Once the season starts, we will also be cutting clips and creating game highlight videos, post game interviews and more. Stick with Lone Star Struck and get your Dallas Cowboys game on!
Since the success of the '90's Cowboys Dynasty I've found myself when asked what team I support explaining that I've been a Cowboys fan since I was 7 years old. Why do I feel the need to explain how long I've been a fan? One word. Bandwagon.
Now I admit I did jump on the Cowboys Bandwagon when they were being successful in the '70's and I feel bandwagon jumping is totally acceptable between the ages of 5 and 12. Any older than that and you'll be a bandwagon jumper forever. You were probably a Patriots fan for a few years. Maybe a Rams fan. Obviously never an Eagles fan because, well, you know. They've never won anything significant enough to warrant said "jump".
Loyalty. Perseverance. Fanaticism. These are three of the big things a true fan brings. I read Shelby's post and she epitomizes what a true Cowboys fan is. At the end of a Cowboys game your emotions should parallel that of the team.
I'm sure this year we'll have plenty of people jumping aboard The Blue Star Super Bowl Express and that's cool. The more the merrier. And after the 6th trophy is hoisted high in the air and we all go out and buy new t-shirts I'll still be explaining that I was a fan way back when just in case I'm mistaken for the newbies.
What was it that first drew me to America's Team in 1975? The cool uniforms? The great teams? The awesome stadium? I think initially it was the cheerleaders.
Do the Cowboys Need to Look at Upgrading the Backup Man in Charge?
According to the Star-Telegram the Cowboys may be looking to upgrade the backup quarterback spot for the upcoming season. Veteran Brad Johnson, the current backup QB, hardly seen any playing time last year except in the last game of the regular season. However, Johnson will be 40 this fall and just doesn't have the throwing arm he once had.
At the same time, Brad Johnson is a professional and has been in the league for 16 years. He's played for 4 different NFL teams and wears a Super Bowl ring. Needless to say, he's seen alot.
If the Cowboys are in the market, who is out there? The only name anyone is mentioning is Chris Simms. Simms hasn't played in a couple of years after a season ending injury in '06. So who says he's better than Johnson?
And, the talks of the Cowboys shopping for a QB totally clash with the reports last week that Jerry Jones was totally confident in our backup man.
Let me just say I am happy we have secured all the major roles we needed to fill this offseason and the staff has done an excellent job of getting it done. This position is a backup role but in an instant can become the breaking point of a season, God forbid anything should happen to Tony Romo. With that said, I think Brad Johnson could get the job done as long as the rest of the offense was perfect. But there is never anything wrong with looking to improve.
Well it's almost that time of the year kiddies. Sundays and Dallas Cowboys Football. We are about a month away from serious Dallas Cowboys coverage and ramblings. I would like to thank Kelly for inviting back to 2008 for my usual "Sunday Spot" feature here on LoneStarStruck and everyone else associated with this website who reads, contributes and gives their two cents. I will also still be contributing some graphics to the site again as well as on my myspace page at www.myspace.com/fredooch . I have already made a Dallas Cowboys graphic schedule for the upcoming season but it needs a little re-work done. I made it really fast and think It can be better. I will be attending at least maybe 2 Dallas Cowboys home games this year and just bought a very expensive digital camera just for the occasion, so be sure to look for my pictures during the season. Anyways guys, I hope you all check out the site weekly and hope to hear from all of you. Are you guys ready for Dallas Cowboys football? Did I even have to ask?
