Draft Day Wrap-up: Cowboys Address RB, TE and CB Concerns

All good things must come to and end, and the Cowboys finally ended the day after accomplishing some goals and raising a couple of questions. Overall, the Cowboys had a great draft and walk away with a boatload of talent highlighted by first round picks Felix Jones - RB and Mike Jenkins - CB. Here is a recap of the weekend's haul with ESPN analisys and mine as well...

2008 Draft Selections

1. Felix Jones (RB) - Jerry Jones may not have gotten Darren McFadden, but he did get an Arkansas running back. Felix Jones is not a power back who is going to consistently push the pile in short-yardage situations, and the fact that he shared carries with McFadden in college and lacks elite size raise concerns about his ability to carry a heavy workload. However, he is a big play waiting to happen; he's quick around the corner, shifty enough to make the first defender miss and turns on the jets in the open field.

2. Mike Jenkins (CB) - Jenkins doesn't have a great deal of upper-body strength and struggles to reroute receivers at the line of scrimmage. You'd also like to see him capitalize on more opportunities to make big plays. That said, he has the potential to develop excellent man-to-man cover skills because he opens his hips well and is a quick, fast athlete. There's also a lot to like about his versatility; he can line up at safety and can make an impact as a kick returner.

3. Martellus Bennett (TE) - Bennett isn't an elite run-blocker and doesn't have great top-end speed. However, he's a great value. Watching him on film and knowing that he played college basketball for two seasons, it's hard not to compare him to San Diego tight end Antonio Gates. Much like Gates, Bennett knows how to use his size to box defenders out and he can make tough catches in traffic. Taking the comparison even further, Bennett is versatile enough to flex out wide as Gates does in the Chargers' offense.

4. Tashard Choice (RB) - Choice doesn't have breakaway speed and will put the ball on the ground, but he reads his blocks well and is a north-south runner who falls forward. He is the second running back the Cowboys have drafted and will provide depth. Also, there may be concern about getting Marion Barber signed long term.

5. Orlando Scandrick (CB) - Scandrick probably would've been better off returning for his senior year to work on his footwork and add some weight to his frame. On the other hand, he's fast enough to run with receivers downfield and he opens his hips quickly. He also has shown a knack for blocking kicks and he can make an impact in the return game.

6. Erik Walden (DE) - Walden excels at getting to the quarterback and has experience lining up at linebacker and end. This is the second pick in a row on which we feel Dallas has reached; Walden isn't big enough to hold his ground at defensive end position and his speed will make it difficult for him to be effective in coverage as a 3-4 outside linebacker.

My Analysis

Let me begin by saying I love Felix Jones and that was the running back I thought the Cowboys would get, but that was assuming Rashard Mendenhall was off the table. I can't believe we didn't draft Mendenhall. Given the choice between the powerful and speedy Mendenhall and Felix Jones, you HAVE to take Mendenhall. He is faster and a more powerful and skilled runner than Jones. While Jones has to utilize his speed to evade defenders, Mendenhall can do the same thing and also take a hit, break tackles, and keep running. Felix Jones will compliment Marion Barber well, but since when do you draft complimentary players with your first round pick? And one more thing, Mendenhall would have given the team great leverage in contract negotiations with Marion Barber who is now in the drivers seat.

My little tirade aside, I thought the Cowboys rebounded well from the first pick blunder. We picked up an excellent coverage cornerback in Mike Jenkins which is something we sorely lacked all season on the other side of Terrence Newman. Jenkin's speed will definitely upgrade the secondary this season. The Cowboy's football lines for those who are into football betting, will surely be in our favor.

Martellus Bennett has an outside shot at becoming a future star. He is an explosive tight-end with great hands and excellent blocking ability. In two tight end sets, the Cowboys now have yet another offensive weapon who can shine.

Tashard Choice will add some depth if he even makes the team out of training camp. He is a marginal runner with a skills set that makes a great NFL career highly unlikely. I could not believe the Cowboys didn't draft a wide receiver with this pick. I was hoping for Mario Mannington to be quite honest and was disappointed to see him go next to the Giants. If we don't add some depth to the pair of 34-year old starting receivers we have now... then when?

Scandrick and Walden were the final selections and the next few months will tell us if they fit in. Consider them secondary options to make the team at this point, but most late draft picks are. As far as I'm concerned, anything after the fourth round is usually a crap shoot and more akin to online football betting.

Overall I would grade this draft a solid B-. Mendenhall would have made it an A- and adding a wide receiver would have further raised the grade to an A+.

Jason Witten: A Super Star Without the Super Ego

Can anyone deny that among all players on last season’s roster, no players star shined brighter than our tight end Jason Witten.

Witten has quietly become the premier tight end of the National Football League. He has always been my favorite Cowboy ever since he was first drafted by the Cowboys in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft. Later that year he actually was drafted by me in my fantasy football draft and has been on my team every year since.

What makes Jason so special is not only his God given ability, but his gritty style of play and his passion and intensity when he’s on the field. He leads by example with his hard-nosed style of play and is an inspiration to all his teammates.

Last season we were treated to not only his best season yet, but some have argued that it might be the best overall season ever for a tight end in NFL history.

Some of you may remember his game against the Detroit Lions last season when he tied an NFL record for a tight end with 15 catches. It was just the tip of the iceberg as he finished his magical season with 96 catches and in doing so he set the Cowboys-single season tight end record for receptions. He also became only the third tight end in NFL history with 96 or more catches. By week 15, Witten became the first Dallas tight end ever to gain over 1,000 receiving yards in a season.

Jason Witten was recognized for his effort by being selected for his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl, his second All Pro selection, and he was nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. So far in his young career he has already amassed 21 touch downs and almost 4,000 yards receiving. In the last three seasons, he has fumbled the ball only once… talk about toughness. Witten became the first tight end in Cowboys history to record three consecutive seasons of at least 60 receptions or more.

What makes me so excited about Jason Witten is that at age 26, the best is yet to come. Can you understand what I’m talking about Cowboys fans!

I’m so glad that we can actually showcase a talented star like Witten who makes headlines not by what model he’s dating, or by what strip clubs he frequents at 3:00 AM, or even because of his illegal or immoral entanglements. Witten is an All-American clean-cut, working-class family man, and that’s the way he likes it. Last week on March 26th, Jason and his wife Michelle were blessed with their second child, Cooper Witten. Those are the kind of "off the field" headlines I prefer to see.

Pacman To The Cowboys? Oh No, Say It Ain't So...

I just heard the rumors that are circulating regarding the Cowboys making a deal for Pacman Jones. If the rumor has any truth to it, then basically the Titans are just giving Pacman away. It doesn't say much for Pacman Jones when the team that drafted you and paved your way to stardom, basically traded you for a bag of stale donuts. (a seventh round pick)

I sure hope there's no truth to any of this. Pacman is the last thing the Cowboys need right now. Unlike Terrell Owens, who was only guilty of having an over-inflated ego when we got him, Pacman has a seedy character and too many run-ins with the law. Adding such a bad influence to a team who is trying to recover from a second straight disappointing finish to their season is bad news.

What this team needs most is another hero, not a thug.

We should be looking for guys with strong character like Jason Witten and Marion Barber, not derelicts like Pacman Jones.

Is This The End For Superman?

While Jerry Jones is busy trying to fill out his coaching staff for next season and getting ready for the NFL Draft, there is something lurking in the midst. For many years he has been the face of the Dallas Cowboys franchise and hailed as Superman, but even Superman came to an unexpected and tragic end against his comic book foe, Doomsday.

Is our own Superman heading for the same tragic ending as the man of steel?

He who was once so highly favored by Cowboys fans everywhere, has now become the target of the fan's scorn and criticism. And while I believe much of this is unwarranted and unjustified, the natives are certainly getting restless, whenever the name Roy Williams is uttered.

This past week, much of the discussions on Cowboys blogs everywhere has been centered around the financial burden that Roy Williams' contract now has on the team.

Roy Williams is scheduled to count $6.667 million against the cap in 2008 and about the same in 2009. Even if they were to cut him (something that has not been ruled out), he would still count for millions against the cap because most of the contract was paid as a signing bonus. Ouch!

Trading him is out of the question, because no team would be willing to take on a contract like that... at least not in this world, but in Metropolis anything is possible.

Despite the realization that Jerry Jones may have stuck the team with a bad contractual obligation, you can't blame Williams for taking the best deal he could get. Wouldn't we do the same thing in his place?

The fact of the matter is that Roy Williams is stuck with us, and we are stuck with him. So why not make the best of the situation?

Greg Ellis won this season's Comeback Player of the Year Award at the ripe old age of 32. Who is to say that the 27-year old Roy Williams can't do the same thing next season?

Shouldn't we cut him some slack after all of the years of loyalty, hard work and excitement he has provided to our team?

The city of Metropolis would never turn their back on their Superman. Why can't the great city of Dallas do the same?

I know it's easy to love a player when he's riding high, and sour on him when the going gets tough. What I'm suggesting is that we give Roy Williams the opportunity to fight through this slump with the support of all Cowboys fans.

There is no telling how much we can achieve when we are all united and aspiring for the same goal. Let us not become his kryptonite.

Joe D Interviews Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson

Today I thought I would surprise all of you with a special phone interview I conducted with former Dallas Cowboy, Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson.

Hollywood Henderson was nice enough to grant my request for an interview last week and on Wednesday we were finally able to get together and have a nice chat about a wide variety of topics including; His early years, his service to his community, his work with children, the state of today's game, and of course the 2007 Cowboys.

Hollywood Henderson is a generous man who has led a remarkable life and it is so interesting to see how this inspiring figure evolves from a troubled young man into a role model for people of all ages. It was a pleasure hearing him tell his uplifting story and I would recommend that each of you by a copy of his newest book entitled, "In Control, The Rebirth of an NFL Legend". The book is available at amazon.com and is the much anticipated follow-up to his first book "Out of Control: Confessions of an NFL Casualty". An autographed copy is also available here.

You can also visit Hollywood Henderson at his website and see all the wonderful things he is currently working on.

The interview is about 14 minutes long, and I included a photo collage which I think compliments the audio very well.

This is only the first of a series of interviews I will be conducting with several notable players and coaches as The Cowboys Nation and Lone Star Struck help to make the offseason more enjoyable for Cowboys fans.

A text transcript of the video is in development and as soon as we get it back from production, you can view the full version of it at myspace.com/TheCowboysNation.

Enjoy the interview!

They're Gathering For A Good Old-Fashioned Pig Roast

Even though the Cowboys' body is still warm from last weekends loss to the Giants that killed any hopes for a sixth Super Bowl ring, local writers are already lining up with their pitchforks and getting ready to poke and prod at the Cowboys every chance they get.

I don't think I was able to find one article in todays papers that had anything positive to say about our beloved franchise, a franchise that puts food on most of those writers tables.

Newy Scrugs was perhaps the most critical and maybe even the most volatile as well. It seems the whole point of his article in the Star-Telegram was to drive a wedge in between head coach Wade Phillips and newly promoted assistant coach Jason Garrett. Here is what he said...

Who else runs their pro football club like this? Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones is off his rocker to make Jason Garrett the highest paid assistant coach in NFL history. It's like letting your mistress stay in the guest room. Jerry is in love with Jason Garrett, even though he's married to Wade Phillips.

Wade walked into this with his eyes wide open because Garrett was hired by the Cowboys before he was. It's Super Bowl or bust for the head coach. Win big or lose your job after '08. We all see what this looks like. Wade is just keeping the seat warm for the golden red-headed child.

You don't see any championship club in the NFL that is operating like this. Look no further to why Jones' team hasn't won a playoff game in 11 seasons.

Some brutal criticism of the Cowboys overall, and a very cheap shot at Jerry Jones! I guess we should all be prepared for a long off season loaded with plenty of criticism and no shortage of haters. The funny part is while they are good at pointing out problems, they offer no solutions of their own.

I guess I should get used to it by now, as it happens every single year. Luckily, I've never been one to put much stock in what these writers have to say. They write about the Cowboys for the money, I write about the Cowboys because I love the team.

I still believe!

MARION THE BARBARIAN WRESTLES STARTING RB JOB AWAY FROM JONES

ESPN is reporting that Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips has decided to have the NFC's Super Bowl favorite open the playoffs with a different look on offense. According to Cowboys sources, Pro Bowl running back Marion Barber will replace season-long starter Julius Jones in Sunday's game against the New York Giants.

Although Barber has not started a single game this season, he is responsible for all three of the Cowboys' individual 100-yard rushing performances. The Cowboys are 8-0 when Barber scores a rushing touchdown. He has 23 rushes for 99 yards and a touchdown in Dallas' two regular-season victories over the Giants.

"You see how excited he is when he gets up after every run -- even if he lost yardage,'' Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce said. "He's one of the toughest backs in the league to bring down even though he's nowhere near being the biggest. You can't tackle that guy high because he'll run you over and he has that great stiff arm.''

Phillips informed Jones of the decision during the bye week so that he had time to recover from his disappointment. According to the source, Jones was upset with the decision and clearly not himself for several days. But he has apparently improved his attitude after being assured he will be rotated into the game and will continue to have the kind of plays he prefers as part of their game plan against the Giants.

It's a move that many Cowboys fans have been calling for, for the better part of the year. The moves immediately impacts the offense in that they have their best offensive players on the field from start to finish.

I wonder if the fact that Julius Jones leaked his dissatisfaction to media last week prompted the surprise move? Last week Jones indicated that he would not return to the Cowboys, during the bye week.

Either way this is great move by Phillips and it shows that he fully intends to maximize all of his opportunities for the playoffs!

Another Day, another trophy for the dallas cowboys!

Last week in my 2007 Cowboys Awards post, I said that Greg Ellis was the biggest surprise of the season. Today that was acknowledged when the NFL named Greg Ellis the Comeback Player of the Year!

Hell yeah!!

Ellis had huge season for the Cowboys this year and was one of the team's biggest leaders on defense. He had 12.5 sacks which was second only to De Marcus Ware.

I think Rotoworld says it best...

"There couldn't have been a better choice. Ellis, who tore his Achilles' tendon nine games into last year and began this season as a backup, was an absolute monster coming off the strong side for Dallas."

Outstanding job by Ellis, Congratulations!

Is Tony Romo Superman?

Number nine is number one!

Tony Romo can add another accomplishment to his long list of accolades, and no I'm not talking about bagging Jessica Simpson. It was reported yesterday that NFLshop.com sold more Dallas Cowboys merchandise than any other team in the NFL. Romo led the team in sales, and he was the top-selling jersey in the nation for 2007, easily surpassing fellow quarterbacks Tom Brady, Brett Favre, Peyton Manning and his baby brother Eli.

Of course Romo has made beating Eli Manning look as easy as 1-2-3. He is 3-0 against Eli and Big Blue, and after this weekend Romo will be able to boast a 5-0 record against the Manning siblings.

Look, up in the air... It's a bird... It's a plane...

Some of the New York newspapers have begun referring to Jessica Simpson as Tony Romo's kryptonite. They cite his drop-off in production since going public with his love connection.  In the three games since professing his love, he has thrown just one touchdown versus five interceptions and is currently in the worst three-game slump of his career. On the flip side, the Giants are rallying around Eli Manning who is currently peaking and playing the best football in his career. Well if Simpson is Romo's kryptonite, than that makes Tony Romo Superman. And as we all know Superman always saves the day!

One last little tidbit...

The Giants say their current team is not the same team that already fell to the Cowboys twice this season. That's funny... the last time I checked they were still wearing those drab blue and red jerseys, and were still listed as the Giants in the standings... oh wait a minute, I forgot... they really are different... the last two times we played them they had Pro Bowler Jeremy Shockey at tightend and now he's out for the season! Hee hee hee...

Patrick Crayton Agrees To 4-Year Contract Extension

As we reported here on this site last week, Patrick Crayton was next in line for a contract extension. Today both sides agreed in principle on a new 4-year extension that will pay Crayton $14 million dollars and includes a $6 million dollar signing bonus.

Crayton has made it clear throughout the season that he had no intentions of playing for any other team besides the Cowboys. When rumors began to surface that he might join Bill Parcells in Miami at the end of the season, he immediately refuted the rumors and said "This is the only place I want to be."

Patrick Crayton has done a fine job filling in for an injured Terry Glenn and has 48 catches for 689 yards and seven touchdowns this season.

Injury Updates: Terrell Owens Is The Latest Casualty

Last night's 20-13 victory over the Carolina Panthers was bittersweet for the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys went into the game with numerous injuries already, including those to Pro Bowl center Andre Gurode, free safety Pat Watkins, and running back Tyson Thompson.

Additionally the team had Tony Romo, Chris Canty and Sal Fasano who were each recovering from injuries sustained in the loss against the Eagles the week prior.

In yesterday's contest, All Pro wide receiver Terrell Owens suffered a high ankle sprain that could force him to miss considerable time. The recovery time for these types of injuries is usually 3-4 weeks which could put T.O. at risk for missing the first playoff game.

The team isn't saying much right now, but they are clearly concerned and have Owens scheduled for an MRI later today. X-rays that were taken last night were negative which means that there is no breaks or fractures. Keep checking back as Lone Star Struck will monitor the situation closely and update his status as we receive more information.

On another note...

Roy Williams was informed that his next horse collar tackle WILL result in a multi-game suspension lasting 2-3 games or possibly longer. Unless Roy Williams is willing to change his tactics, relying on him as a key player may prove to be a bad decision by the organization. Some already feel that Williams may never be able to adapt and that he is already hurting the team with his numerous penalties.

Roy Williams Loses His Appeal And T.O. Had Plenty To Say About It

Roy Williams is getting a lot of ink these days, but most of it is not due in great part to his performance. In fact, quite the contrary.

Where do I begin... well as most of you know by now Roy Williams had been suspended one game and fined for his horse collar tackle on Donovan McNabb last Sunday in the loss against the Eagles. Williams immediately appealed the decision and today the NFL released this statement while denying his appeal...

"Commissioner (Roger) Goodell has denied the appeal of the one-game suspension of Roy Williams," the NFL said in a statement. "The horse-collar tackling technique is prohibited because the Competition Committee and the clubs have determined that it presents an unacceptable risk to player safety. Rules that protect and advance player safety must be enforced in a way that will deter violations and prevent injuries from occurring."

In an article by Kevin Sherrington of the Dallas Morning News, he wrote...
How bad has this week been for No. 31? On Sunday, he's flagged for his collar of Donovan McNabb. Monday, he's fined $35,000 and benched. And Tuesday, he learns that 11 Cowboys have been selected as Pro Bowl starters or reserves, and he's not one of them. The omission lends some credibility to his reputation as a safety that can't cover anymore, and now the NFL isn't so crazy about the way he tackles, either.

His coaches and teammates ought to be fed up, too. The NFL fined him twice this season and warned him in writing after the last one, and still he acted recklessly.

Today, Terrell Owens had a press conference and spent a great deal of it being very critical not only of the particular play, but also of his teammate Roy Williams.

"Roy Williams is a quality player, but he has to understand that he is not helping his team with those types of penalties. He has to start playing by the rules. Our team is heading into the playoffs and we need Roy to get it together."

You can listen to the complete press conference here.

Donovan McNabb had this to say on the illegal tackle by Roy Williams...

"It is dangerous and I've kind of seen it first hand happen to (Terrell Owens)," McNabb said. "I remember when it happened and I actually thought it was worse than what it was -- a broken ankle. It's a play where you're kind of defenseless because you think you've passed a guy and then all of a sudden he kind of yanks you back. Your feet are up under you. You get bent back in an awkward position. Anything can break. In that situation, you just kind of watch the film and feel truly blessed that he didn't grab my ankle. With him pulling me back and grabbing my ankle, you never know what could have happened. I was able to get my feet from up under me and put myself in a position where I could fall safely."

Like T.O. said, it's time for everyone on the team to focus 24/7. We already had a heartbreaking end to a season last year, we dont need another. He said everyone needs to set their sites on Arizona. (That's where the Super Bowl is this season)

Williams leads the team with 65 solo tackles and is second in total tackles with 83, so his absence will be a stiff blow to the Cowboys, especially because of the timing.

Roy Williams Suspended For Horse Collar On McNabb

The NFL took swift action on Cowboys safety Roy Williams and suspended him for one game without pay today, for his horse collar penalty on Sunday.

Roy Williams committed the penalty while taking down Donvan McNabb during the Cowboy's loss to the Eagles. It is his third horse collar penalty of the year, and this time it is going to cost him $37,000.

This couldn't have come at a worse time for the Cowboys who will probably be without the services of Pat Watkins on Saturday against the Carolina Panthers. Watkins sustained a mild concussion and isn't expected to play.

Wade Phillips had this to say about it...

“To me, if you tackle a guy from behind like that and you’re not falling on his legs, you’re not hurting anybody,” Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said. “So what’s wrong with it? Now, if you’re falling on his legs, like he did before, then that’s one thing. But that’s the rule and we need to abide by it. He is just going to have to learn to do it different. He passed it up a couple times in that game.”

“He’s real strong, especially with his hands. You go to your strength, so he’s going to grab somebody with his hands. And the way it is now, they tape those jerseys in the back, so you can’t grab them, you can’t hold on to them. The only thing you can grab is something behind him. And he’s coming from behind, he has to learn to lay out. But what he’s used to doing is grabbing them, because he’s so strong with his hands. He hasn’t been able to break that habit obviously.”

Williams can, and probably will appeal it which may allow him to play on Saturday, but no decision has been made yet.

Jay Ratliff Signs A New 5-Year Extension

The Dallas Morning News is reporting that nose tackle Jay Ratliff has signed a five-year contract extension worth $20.5 million. The Dallas Cowboys acted quickly on Ratliff, who was scheduled to be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

Ratliff is in the midst of a fine season since he took over for the injured Jason Ferguson at nose tackle. He currently has 25 tackles and leads the team with 13 quarterback pressures. Despite being smaller than most nose tackles, Ratliff makes up for his lack of size with his quick bursts and hard-hitting style. He has becomes one of the leaders on defense.

Ratliff joins Tony Romo as the latest players to sign extensions this season. Jerry Jones is quietly going about his business of ensuring that he retains his top players. Rumor has it that Patrick Crayton is next in line for an extension.

Things continue to look up for the Silver and Blue!

Cowboys Are The NFC East Champions

After a very long and hard fought season, the Cowboys have officially clinched the NFC East Division Title. In a very ironic twist of fate, the Cowboys were behind for over 59 minutes of today's game against the Detroit Lions. It was not until the fourth quarter with just seconds left in a 27-21 game, that a Tony Romo touchdown strike to Jason Witten tied the score at 27-27, and then Nick Folk sealed the deal with the extra point.

It was an exciting game that had all the earmarks of a loss until the dramatic finish choreographed by Tony Romo. Romo set a new franchise record with 17 consecutive games with a touchdown, and Jason Witten set career highs in catches (15) and yardage (138), but today was not about individual achievements, today we celebrate a team that has won the NFC East for the first time in over ten seasons, and is on the verge of shattering the all time record for wins in franchise history.

Congratulations to the 2007 Dallas Cowboys!

Terrell Owens Captures Monthly Honor, And Has MVP Written All Over Him

Terrell Owens is making headlines once again this season, although this time he is doing it with his MVP caliber level of play. The Cowboy's prolific wide receiver, is being honored by the NFL as the NFC Offensive Player of the Month.

Owens had an impressive November that saw him reel in 39 catches for 693 yards, and a whopping nine touchdowns. T.O. is one of the most dominating receivers in the game and leads the NFL with 1,250 yards and 17.2 yards per catch. Last month he tied Bob Hayes for the franchise record of most touchdowns in a game with four. He is also on the verge of shattering the Cowboys single season touchdown record. He is currently tied with Frank Clarke who held the record with 14 TD's.

Terrell Owens is clearly having one of the best season's of his career and with four games left to play, he is only 353 yards from eclipsing Michael Irvin's single season record of 1,603 yards in 1995. T.O.'s personal career high in yardage came in 2000 when he led the league with 1,451 yards receiving. In 2001 he set his career high in touchdowns with 16.

While Tom Brady, Tony Romo and Adrian Peterson get most of the raves when it comes to choosing an Offensive MVP, don't count out my sleeper pick, Terrell Owens. T.O. is a force to be reckoned with this season.

A Good Old-Fashioned Gunfight

Tonight's premier matchup will be like a good old-fashioned gunfight, featuring two of the best gunslingers in the country in Brett Favre and Tony Romo. It's a classic matchup that features the slick veteran who has won countless battles, versus the new kid in town with the faster draw and the quicker trigger finger.

You can expect to see plenty of downfield action as both Favre and Romo try to gain the advantage by throwing deep, and throwing often. Each team's secondary will face a big challenge keeping up with the air show, and it could come down to some fancy footwork and quick hands, from Terence Newman and Anthony Henry to save the day.

Expect the Dallas pass rush to be fast and furious tonight. I expect huge efforts from DeMarcus Ware, Chris Canty and Greg Ellis.

The Dallas rushing attack featuring Marion the Barbarian, and Julius Jones easily trumps the Green Bay Packers, and will add balance to the overall Cowboys attack.

I have been waiting for this game for over a month, and now that it is finally here I am anxiously awaiting the start of what's bound to be one of the best games of the year!

My prediction: Cowboys 31 - Packers 28

Will The Real Terrell Owens Please Stand Up!

Long before Terrell Owens became a Cowboy, we all heard about his mouth being bigger than his heart, and his penchant for getting into trouble being greater than his talent.

I never really knew anything about Terrell Owens except for what I heard on ESPN and read in Sports Illustrated. It got to the point where I actually hated the guy, and yet I really knew nothing about the man. Shame on me.

I have now observed Terrell Owens first hand for almost two years. He is everything that I hoped he would be, and nothing like the derelict he was portrayed as by the media. For years they have maligned his heart, his desire and his character, and yet I've never seen that Terrell Owens.

The Terrell Owens I've seen is a natural born leader. In 2006 I saw him go out there and play hurt for almost an entire season. I would see him cringe with pain everytime he caught a rocket from Tony Romo. Yes, he dropped some of those passes, but even still he was among the leaders in receiving with another 1000 yard campaign, 13 touchdowns and 85 receptions. Incredible...

Those numbers don't even tell the story of how he took a young unproven quarterback who had no NFL experience under his belt, and helped him become the star he is today. It doesn't tell the story of a man who played hurt everyday and showed his teammates that playing in the NFL is a privilege not a birthright. Terrell Owens found a home in Dallas, and in Owens, Dallas found an inspirational leader.

Now we are only five games away from the end of the regular season. Owens is on the verge of his greatest season ever. He already has 1,100 yards and 13 touchdowns. He is 300 yards, and 3 touchdowns away from his career highs with five games left to play. He has been Romo's go to guy all season long. He leads the team in TD's and in fact, he has more touchdowns then the entire receiving corps combined.

Despite all of Owens heroics and his outstanding production, you don't hear anything about it from the media. Those same sportscasters and sports writers that were so willing to tarnish Terrell Owens even at the beginning of the season, have all suddenly gone quiet. They have nothing else to say. They are all a disgrace to their profession.

When Brett Favre and Jeremy Shockey scream and holler, or curse out their teammates when they do wrong, or celebrate after a game winning score, they are called gutsy and fiery. When Terrell Owens did those same things in his past, he was called a clubhouse cancer, and a showboat, and an arrogant player.

I am so grateful that Terrell Owens chose to play out his career with the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas is where all shining stars belong. I am glad that I got to see the real Terrell Owens have his finest season now in 2007.

Today, I went and purchased a Christmas gift for a little boy and decided on a Dallas Cowboys Jersey. They had every jersey that I could have possibly wanted, but I picked out the one that said "Owens" on the back. It made me feel good inside, and I know it will bring a warm smile to his face on Christmas morning.

I can't ever take back all the bad things I've thought about Terrell Owens before he became a Cowboy. But I can make up for it by making sure I never get swayed by the media again, and by letting people know that if they want to see the real Terrell Owens, they should tune into a Dallas Cowboys football game and watch T.O. do his magic.

Jason Witten And Leonard Davis Named To Sporting News All Pro Team

Congratulations to both TE Jason Witten and G Leonard Davis for being named to this years mid-season All Pro Team by the Sporting News.

Davis has proven to be every bit as good as advertised after joining the Cowboys this off season. His presence on the offensive line is one of the reasons Tony Romo is having such a fine second season.

Jason Witten has been nothing short of spectacular, and even though I've been saying it since the pre-season, I am glad that he is now recognized by everyone as the best tight-end in the game right now.

I was a little disappointed that Brett Favre edged out Tony Romo at quarterback, and I think it was more of a sentimental vote than anything else. Romo leads Favre in QB Rating and TD's thrown. As far as I'm concerned, Tony Romo IS the best QB in the NFC!

Terrell Owens was also slighted as he was beaten out by Plaxico Burress and Steve Smith at the Wide Receiver positions. Owens has as many touchdowns as Plaxico, and he has more yards 730 to 529, and catches 44 to 40. He was totally hosed.

On defense, you could make a strong argument that De Marcus Ware was shafted by TSN. Ware is having a huge season and already has 7 sacks at the halfway point of the season and leads the league. He is the most feared linebacker in the NFC and is frequently keyed in on by opposing guards and tight-ends. I have no doubt, that he will be the unanimous choice for All Pro and Pro Bowl honors at the end of the season.

Get your popcorn ready for Sunday's game!

If You Think Our Offense Is Huge Now, You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet!

The Cowboys keep going and going like the Energizer Bunny these days. As they roll into the Meadowlands for their big confrontation with the New York Giants on Sunday, they can be proud of the fact that they have the number one ranked offense in the NFC.

One of the main reasons the offense is doing so well is because of the leagues best tight end, Jason Witten. When Terry Glenn went down with an injury, many wondered how big of a negative impact it would have on the receiving corps. When Patrick Crayton was named as the number two starter, we all wondered if he would be up for the challenge. Last season, Terry Glenn had 70 receptions for over 1,000 yards with six touchdowns. So far based on current trends, Crayton is on pace for 52 catches and 800 yards. Not bad, but certainly not great either.

Witten, on the other hand has put up numbers worthy of a second receiver and is on pace for 90 receptions for 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns. Because of the Glenn injury, we discovered a superior offensive weapon in Jason Witten. Sure, he was always regarded as fine tightend, but his previous career high was only 757 yards on 66 catches. It wasn't until this season that he became a critical part of the passing game.

Within the next 1-2 weeks, Terry Glenn is expected to begin practicing again, and getting himself into game day condition. The way I see it, I expect Terry Glenn to start on Thursday, November 29th, against the Green Bay Packers. With both teams currently sporting identical records of 7-1, it will be billed as "The Clash of the Titans."

It will be the perfect time to inject some fresh legs and some new life into our powerhouse offense. The NFC won't know what hit them.

Once Glenn returns to the fold, our offense will be unparalleled in the NFC and on the same level and maybe even superior to the Patriots and Colts.

Tony Romo will now have not two reliable targets to throw his bombs to, but THREE Pro Bowl receivers in Terrell Owens, Jason Witten and Terry Glenn.

I am excited about seeing all three of them playing together once again, as we march all the way to the post season and beyond.

Breaking News: Tony Romo Signs A 6-Year $67.5 Million Dollar Deal

Great news Cowboys fans!

ESPN has just reported that Dallas Cowboys quarterback, Tony Romo will now be wearing the silver and blue until the year 2014, after a signing a huge landmark deal that will put him among the highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL.

ESPN also says that the deal is expected to be announced at an 11 a.m. ET press conference on Tuesday and was primarily negotiated on Romo's behalf by agents Ken Kremer and Tom Condon.

We have been clamoring for Jerry Jones to get a deal done since the preseason here at StarStruck, and now we just couldn't be happier.

With Tony Romo signed, sealed, and delivered, the Cowboys have now put the future of the franchise in the hands of one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL. Romo has proven that he is resilient and that he can learn and continue to grow into a dominant signal caller.

Tony Romo was in the final year of his contract and would have become a free agent at the end of the season. Instead he will now focus on leading the Cowboys to another coveted Super Bowl trophy in 2008 and beyond.

This is a great day to be Cowboys fan!

ESPN and FOX Should Give The Cowboys Their Props

I am growing sick and tired of the lack of respect that is being shown to the Dallas Cowboys during some popular pregame shows like NFL Today, FOX NFL Sunday, ESPN NFL Blitz, etc.

You would think that a team like the Cowboys who lead their division with a 6-1 record would get some recognition for their achievement. Instead, they are constantly the butt end of a joke and constantly subjected to many underhanded and uncalled for remarks suggesting that the Cowboys are not as good as their record would dictate.

Each of those shows actually feature many former Dallas Cowboys players or head coaches including Jimmie Johnson, Emmitt Smith, Deion Sanders, Troy Aikman, just to name a few. In many instances I have seen them defend the team or the player, most notably Tony Romo, whenever something is said that is really out of line. Most of the time it's just laughed off like it's a big joke, although believe me, I'm certainly not laughing.

This past Sunday I actually reached a boiling point after the Giants beat the Dolphins for their sixth straight win.  During the post game show, one of the announcers made an off the cuff remark about the cream finally rising to the top in the NFC East.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME???

The Giants beat the damn 0-8 Miami Dolphins, not the 8-0 New England Patriots! Before that they played beat the 2-6 San Francisco 49ers, the 1-6 Atlanta Falcons, and the 1-7 New York Jets. We're supposed to be afraid of the Giants just because they won six straight games against teams with a combined record of 11-34? Gimme a freaking break!

I just can't wait until week 10 when we storm into Giants Stadium and show them and each of the NFL sports networks, who the real class of the division is.

I hope that ESPN and Fox will have the guts to say they were wrong about the Cowboys and finally give Tony Romo and company, the respect and recognition they deserve.

Timing Is Everything This Season

One of the many reasons I know that this is the Dallas Cowboys' year is that unlike last season, many things have been going the Cowboy's way so far this season.

Take this weekend for example, you couldn't have picked a better time for the Cowboys to have their bye week!

With Tony Romo nursing a sore hamstring and Terrell Owens trying to recover from a gimpy ankle, the timing couldn't have been more perfect to rest our teams two biggest stars.

Even Anthony Henry, who has been sorely missed would not have been able to play this weekend if there had been a game, but is expected to be fully recovered by week nine, just in time to play the Eagles.

The entire team will also benefit from the mental break of the first half of the season, and have some time to contemplate their successful first half, and what they need to do to finish out the season with a big bang!

Things seem to be quiet and peaceful in Irving, Texas these days, and you know what???

It feels good!!! It's nice to know that there is no inner turmoil or player controversies as we get ready for the second half.

If anyone had any doubts about Wade Phillips and the rest of the coaching staff, you can all put your minds at ease. Phillips and company have done a remarkable job of transitioning the team into a winning mindset after the disappointment of last season. They have done a wonderful job of making Terrell Owens feel like an insider and for the first time since he became a Cowboy, he has taken a large leadership role on this team. You can also credit Jason Garrett for helping Tony Romo take the next big step in developing into one of the leagues top quarterbacks.

Like I said, things are really going good for the Cowboys this year. Sometimes, it's the little things you notice that can have a major impact on the team.

GO COWBOYS!

You Are What Your Record Says You Are

It's so hard to believe that we are already almost at the halfway point in the season already...

Here we are going into our bye week with a nearly perfect 6-1 record and sitting all alone at the top of the NFC East division.

One can argue that the last three games were not exactly vintage Cowboys football, but sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. And, we did win two of those three games...

Somehow though, this season tends to remind me of the great run we had last season after Tony Romo replaced Drew Bledsoe. We looked so strong and played so well and then all of a sudden we ran into a brickwall and practically limped into that game in Seattle. You all know how that ended up...

What worries me is not so much that we lost to the Patriots, heck who hasn't lost to them...

I'm more concerned at how difficult it was to get the wins over bad teams like the Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings. We should have really blown those teams away and we didn't. We barely came out of Buffalo with that exciting win, and Sunday's game had me completely dumbfounded. The final score of 24-14 over the Vikings does not even tell the complete story of what happened. When you look at the Cowboys total yardage of 381 yards compared to the Vikings 196, and when you see that we completed 31 passes compared to only 6 completions for the Vikings, you can't help but wonder why the score was not more like 38-14. In fact, if you take away that defensive touchdown by Pat Watkins, it begs the question, "How in the world did we have all that offense and yet only score 17 points?"

Anyhow, my concern is the schedule we have to deal with after we return from our bye. We must go to Philadelphia to face the Eagles, and then to New York to face a very hot Giants team. I'm not as worried about the Eagles as I am about the Giants who are only one game behind us.

We need to play some very crisp football from here on out. We can't bank on getting lucky again. I am very impressed with both the defense and offense so far this season. I am equally impressed with our Special Teams play as well. The Dallas Cowboys do not suffer from any serious flaws in their game. However, they do have many instances during a game where they seem to lose some focus and make some bad decisions.

While we may have been able to overcome some of that malaise in the first half of the season, I'm not so sure we will be as lucky in the second half. That's why I implore Wade Phillips and the rest of the coaching staff to iron out these minor flaws now and roll into Philadelphia with a killer instinct. I believe the Cowboys are the best team in the division, but we need to make sure that the players believe that as well, and most importantly play with the swagger and confidence of a championship team.

A win is a win is a win. We are 6-1 and like Bill Parcells always used to say, "You are what your record says you are." The Cowboys are on the verge of a magical season. They have to kick it up a notch and start believing in themselves. If they can do that, you can tell the rest of the NFC East, "turn out the light's, the party's over." Here's to a great second half...

A Side Note - Can we all agree that our tight end Jason Witten has been the overwhelming MVP of the team so far this season? What an amazing first half by Witten who leads all recievers in receptions, total yardage, and is tied for the lead in touchdowns with 4. He is currently the top ranked tight end in the NFC, and leads the league in total yardage, yards per catch, yards per game, receptions, and touchdowns. At only 25 years old, Witten is now coming into his own, and before all is said and done, he may just well be the best tight end in the history of the franchise.

Don't Hang This Loss On Our Defense

When the Patriots rolled into town on Sunday, some likened it to the "Clash of the Titans," and on many levels it was. Two great teams, both with undefeated records, were going to do battle on an extreme level, and only one team would come out of it with their undefeated record intact. Unfortunately, it was the Patriots who prevailed as the Cowboys were left scratching their heads and wondering what went wrong.

A victory for the Cowboys was clearly in their grasp in the early going, but as the seconds and then minutes ticked away, the chasm between the Patriots and the Cowboys widened, and there was no catching the Pats on this day.

The Cowboys defense came ready to play, the offense on the other hand, did not. The Cowboys offense did what they've been doing all season long, and didn't show up until the second quarter of the game. For the first five games of the season, they were able to get away with their three-quarters style of play, but when you face a team as good as the Patriots, you need to play at full throttle for all four quarters.

Instead of wearing down the Patriots defense, our offense wore down our own defense. They failed to convert on third-down way too many times early in the game, and the Patriots dominated possession of the ball for most of the first half and kept the Dallas defense on the field far longer than they should have been. Of course there were other factors that contributed to the loss, like the number of penalties (12-98 Yards), and not being able to establish the run until it was too late, but when you allow the opposition to control the ball for almost 40 minutes, it's going to bite you in the butt.

The bottom line is that we lost and now we have to move on and focus on the Vikings. We can only hope that moving forward that the Cowboys show up ready to play... for all four quarters...

Go Cowboys!

It's Time For Jerry To Reach Into His Saddle Bags And Pay Romo

Before all is said and done this season, Tony Romo is going to sign the richest deal ever awarded to any player in NFL history.

Every time Romo throws a touchdown, his stock rises by the millions. The Cowboys keep piling up the points, and Tony Romo has taken the team somewhere it hasn't been since 1995, the last time they started the season 4-0.

I believe that Jerry Jones was banking on Tony Romo struggling to begin the season, and thus gain some precious leverage in contract negotiations with his star quarterback. But it all backfired on him. Jerry Jones rolled the dice and it came up snake-eyes. Now it's time to pay the piper.

If Jones cant work out a long-term deal before the end of the season, and there are no on-going talks right now, Romo could be playing for another team in 2008-2009. Even if the team decided to make Romo their non exclusive franchise player, they run the very real risk of losing him to any team willing to part with two first round draft picks. A price that many teams would gladly play for a pro bowl quarterback who has yet to reach his prime.

The Cowboys must avoid that scenario at all costs.

I think the time for posturing has past, and that it's time for Jerry Jones to pony up the big bucks and secure the future of this franchise for the rest of this decade.

Tony Romo has exceeded all of our expectations and has resurrected a franchise that had been floundering.

It is time to reward him for his remarkable leadership, his adrenaline-pumping style of play, and his electrifying game-breaking abilities. Tony Romo is going to bring a Super Bowl trophy back to Dallas this season, and also pave the way for another dominating Cowboys dynasty.

Some Ups And Downs On Defense

After an amazing start to what looked like a Pro Bowl type season, Anthony Henry has suffered a setback. I know an ankle sprain may not seem like a significant injury on the surface, but there are two types of ankle sprains, and the high ankle sprain that Henry suffered is more severe than the other.

Anthony Henry was the team's best defensive player after the first three games of the season. Ironically he was only playing because starting CB Terrence Newman was still a little banged up and could not play. Henry took that opportunity to take the ball and literally run with it. It was his coming out party and Cowboys fans everywhere were absolutely thrilled about their new-found star!

Now that the Cowboy's medical staff have had a couple of days to analyze the results of the x-rays, the team is saying that Henry could miss as much as 4 weeks. Considering that the Cowboys have a bye in week 8, Henry should be ready to play against the Philadelphia Eagles in week nine.

In other news, how about the season debut of Greg Ellis. After finally getting the contract extension he was begging for, he was able to keep his mouth shut, take the field, and deliver an impressive performance against the St. Louis Rams. Even though I'm still mad at the way Ellis chose to handle his contract negotiations by putting down the team and using the press as his pulpit, I am willing to bury the hatchet and move on. Ellis was in on 15 snaps and finished the game with 1 1/2 sacks.

I expect Ellis to get even better as the season rolls along and that can only mean great news for our defense which still seems to struggle at times. So far our offense has surely made some noise with some impressive gains made in our passing and rushing game.

However, in the long run it's the defense that will carry this team once they start facing some stiffer competition. I expect our defense to get better as they get healthier, and by season's end, the Cowboys will have one of the premier defenses in the NFL.

Lets Bury The Eagles While We Can

Today, I couldn't help but notice how many Cowboys blogs and Cowboys fans that suggested we should root for the Eagles on Monday Night Football so that the Dallas Cowboys would be all alone in first place in the NFC East.

Nobody wants to see the Cowboys leading the NFC all alone with a perfect 2-0 record more than me, but let's get real Cowboys fans...

If there is a chance of having the Eagles start the season 0-2 then that's what we should be rooting for.

Who cares if the Washington Redskins are tied with us this early in the season? Everyone knows that it's the Eagles who represent the biggest threat to a division title for our team, not the Redskins.

Let's hope the Redskins pound the Eagles tonight and hopefully derail their shot at a division title.

As far as the Redskins go, let them enjoy their short stay in first place with our team while it lasts. It won't be long before they fall to 2-2 and the Cowboys are all alone in first place with a 4-0 record after taking out the hapless Bears and the woeful Rams.

Let me be so bold as to predict that the Dallas Cowboys will go into their bye week with a record that will be no worse than 6-1.

Go Cowboys!

A Special 9/11 Message From StarStruck

Time does not heal all wounds.

The pain of what happened on September 11th, 2001 has not subsided. We can put the tragedy of what took place on that day out of our minds, but we can never put it out of our hearts.

Every single day, Americans are still dying because of 9/11. Their lives continue to raise the death toll of that tragic day. What started out as 3,000 lives lost, has now eclipsed 6,000.

Let's take some time to remember those victims and to honor them. Let's take a few minutes to remember and honor those who put their lives on the line every single waking hour, so that we here at home can go on living our lives and rebuilding the dreams that perished on that fateful day.

Tens of thousands of service men and women don't have the luxury of going online each morning to see what place their team is in the standings, or to read blogs about their favorite teams. They risk their lives so that millions of us can enjoy these simple pleasures.

The best way to honor the fallen is to go on living the life and cherishing the freedom for which they died defending.

The best way to honor the heroes who still fight to preserve our way of life, is to live our lives in a manner that is worth defending. To reflect the values and the virtues of being an American, every single day.

Freedom and liberty can mean a million different things to a million different people, but there is one common truth that our differences cannot dissuade. Freedom is as fragile or as strong as the will of those who are willing to defend it.

Support our troops, remember September 11th, and be proud to be American.

Nick Folk: Alive and Kicking

When the Dallas Cowboys drafted kicker Nick Folk in the sixth round of the 2007 Draft, some eyebrows may have been raised. After all, the Cowboys already had Martin Gramatica who proved his worth to the team after taking over for free agent bust, Mike Vanderjagt.

It didn't take long for the former Arizona Wildcat to start making noise and getting some well deserved attention. Ever since inking a 4-year contract shortly before the start of training camp, Nick Folk has been nothing short of remarkable as a kicker. The Cowboys already knew he had a powerful kick, but it wasn't until they actually saw him perform in camp, that they learned how accurate of a kicker he actually was.

After the first two days of training camp, there were already whispers that Gramatica's grip on the starting kickers job, had begun to loosen.

During the very first day of kicking drills, Martin Gramatica missed 4 of his 6 attempts, while Nick Folk made all 6 of his kicks including a 51-yard strike. All of a sudden the whispers started getting louder, and Gramatica's hold on the job had now turned into a real competition.

By the time the preseason games kicked off, it was clear that Folk was leading the way as he kept making field goal after field goal.

On Saturday, September 1st the contest was over and Nick Folk had become the Dallas Cowboys new kicker, after Martin Gramatica was placed on Injured Reserve, thus ending his season.

Nick Folk brings some youth and exuberance to the team has proven to be a fierce competitor and clutch kicker throughout his stellar college career. Now he finds himself at the forefront of one of the most storied franchises in the NFL, in a season where expectations are at an all-time high.

I expect Nick Folk to step up and become one of the top kickers in the league as soon as this season.

He is that good!

Training Camp News: Owens, Glenn And Columbo Updates

Not much cooking these days at Cowboys training camp, but the team did get some good news when wide receiver, Terrell Owens returned to the practice field. Owens missed a few days to rest a sore hamstring and said he is now 100%.

"I don't like sitting out," T.O. said. "That was a decision that Coach made. I'm not the one to argue with him."

Anyone who's followed Terrell's career over the years can vouch that Owen's is not one to argue with his head coach... YEAH, RIGHT!

Here's some more positive news for you... OT Marc Colombo, who is recovering from a knee scope, could practice on Saturday. He still might not be ready to play in the season opener... Hey, you can't always get what you want. Wow, that would make a great title for a song!

Poor Terry Glenn begins his rehab after successful surgery on his knee. I wish I was as poor as him...

Somebody please assure me that the broadcast of our first preseason game won't be overrun by all the Michael Vick and Pac Man Jones drama. That would really be a bummer.

That's all for now and as we head into our first pre season game I just want to give a shout out to all the brave men and women serving our country...

I know so many of you won't be able to watch the game, but I want all of you to know that you are in our thoughts and in our hearts, and we here at StarStruck know that you are the real America's Team!

GO COWBOYS!

Jerry Needs To Do Some Fixin Up Before The Season Starts

I can't believe that football is almost here. (somebody pinch me!) With only a couple of days left until the Cowboys begin training camp, there still seem to be a few lingering issues. Of course no matter what the team does, there will always be some new controversy or adversity to deal with, but I'm hoping that they can get these few loose ends tied up so that they don't become a distraction down the road.

1. Don't go singing the praises of how great and how exciting first round draft pick Anthony Spencer is, and then still not have the rookie defensive end signed with training camp only two days away. As a matter of fact, only one of the Cowboys' first eight draft picks have signed on the dotted line so far, and that only happened this past Friday when they signed seventh round pick, fullback Deon Anderson. I know that the Cowboys like to drag their feet when it comes to working out contracts with their players, but this is ridiculous. I want to see these guys suited up and ready to compete so that we can take the best team possible up north when the regular season starts. Get that wallet out and start forking over those greenbacks, JJ.

2. This is also another contract issue, but can somebody tell me what the delay is with signing Tony Romo to an extension? I know that both sides have agreed to get a deal done during the season, but is negotiating a contract during the week of a big Cowboys - Eagles game the way to go with Tony Romo? Call me crazy, but I have never been a big fan of contract negotiations taking place once the season begins. I can think of a million reasons why you shouldn't do it, but I can't think of one good reason why you would. When the Cowboys passed on drafting Brady Quinn at the NFL Draft, I thought for sure it meant a long term deal was only days away for Romo. It goes to show you how much I know. What do you think?

3. Will somebody please tell Greg Ellis to shut up already. In 2005 he complained about Bill Parcels not giving him any love. Then he complained about his decreased playing time. (he didn't mention anything about his decreased performance at the time.) The he walked out after the first day of mini camp. Four weeks ago he asked for his release because Jerry Jones wouldn't meet with him privately. And now he's going around telling any player that will listen to him that the "Cowboys have slapped him in the face." Do we really need this negativity as we try and start a brand new season? I wish he would just stop his whining and just play some football.

Obviously we are not talking about anything major here, but I was bored and I wanted to write down some of the little things that are bugging me so far. Maybe a few of these things can be resolved before we take the field on Sunday, September 9th against the New York Giants.

Oh and by the way, with regard to this weeks poll, you damn well know I got my popcorn ready!

The Future Looks Bright For The Silver And Blue

This is in response to a comment to the blog I posted yesterday. I was going to post it as a comment, but thought I'd share it with a larger audience instead. Here goes...

It's OK to disagree. We all have the same goal and that is to see the Cowboys build a dynasty.

Dynasties are not built on a year-to-year strategy. They are built on a strategy that employs long term success based on moves that address not only the current needs but future ones as well.

You mentioned that the Cowboys needed an offensive playmaker and I remind you that the Cowboys had one of the best scoring teams in the NFC and certainly the best in their division.

Our collapse last year was on defense, NOT offense. Undecided

The Cowboys needed to shore that defense up and they made a major stride in doing that on Draft Day.

We have got ourselves a big playmaker on defense. If you love DeMarcus Ware, then wait until you see Anthony Spencer! Cool

With regard to the 1st round pick in 2008, how will you feel if Cleveland does so bad they finish with a top 5 pick?

Are you saying this was not a great move by the Cowboys?

Believe me Cowboy fans, Jerry Jones is as shrewd a business man as there is in this world.

He built an empire by ensuring that his future would be better than the present.

That's the way it works in sports as well.

The Cowboys are not looking for a one night stand in 2007. They are looking to reclaim the dynasty that we lost when we started playing from year to year and running in that same old threadmill.

We now have a strategy that will keep this franchise competitive for years to come. Wink

It is built on young stars like Marion Barber (who was acquired in a similar Draft Day trade), Julius Jones, DeMarcus Ware, Bobby Carpenter, Tony Romo and others.

Our future is bright now and will be even brighter in the years to come!

I hope that the 5 people who read this blog will comment on it and let me know what you think!

I LOVE THE COWBOYS!! Laughing

Draft Day Trades Have The Boys' Sitting Pretty

I've never been one to spend an entire day watching the NFL Draft, but I've been under the weather and so I found myself staying home and watching ESPN intently.

Let me first say how much the draft coverage of ESPN sucks. Pick after pick they have 5 different so-called experts on their panel who continually speculate and predict who each team will take, and they are wrong 90% of the time.

I mean they aren't even getting the position right, let alone the player. And everytime they got it wrong they would say something like "another shocker here at the NFL Draft in New York" or "what a surprising move by the (insert team name) ...", gimme a freaking break!

Led by Chris Berman, who I like to refer to as the mouth that swallowed New York, these guys are a big joke. (with apologies to Steve Young who actually knows what he's talking about but is constantly drowned out by the other 4 guys)

Secondly, does the commissioner have to say "with the ___ pick of the 2007 NFL Draft" every single time? I mean come on, we know it's the 2007 NFL Draft, we dont need to hear it 250 times.

Despite those two complaints I have to say I actually enjoyed watching and waiting until the Dallas Cowboys made their selection with the 22nd pick (of the 2007 NFL Draft).

So who did they take with the 22nd pick (of the 2007 NFL Draft), you ask?

Well, as it turned out, our Cowboys traded the pick to the Cleveland Browns who finally took Brady Quinn with the 22nd pick (of the 2007 NFL Draft).

See what I mean, lol. Admit it, you are sick of hearing it too aren't you?

I actuall felt bad for Brady Quinn who was projected to go in the top 3 picks by our notable panel of experts. NOT! The poor guy had a hundred cameras on him watching his every emotion as pick after pick transpired. By the time he was finally chosen, his pinstriped jacket was gone, his collar was unbuttoned, his tie was hanging loosely, and his well kept hair was a mess. What a drag... Now he will only make 5 million per season instead of 8 million.

Anyhow, I digress...

The fact is that the Cowboys played their cards perfectly!

There was no doubt that Brady Quinn was the guy to take for the Cowboys who were set to take the best available athlete.

The Cowboys had no real needs as they addressed those needs by signing Leonard Davis and Ken Hamlin in the off-season.

As a matter of fact, after pick number 6 I had already told my girlfriend that the Cowboys could be looking at Brady Quinn they way I figured it.

I actually looked at all the teams that had yet to draft and I didn't see any team with a huge need at quarterback except the Jaguars (sorry Jacksonville but Leftwich sucks).

When the Jags decided to draft a safety instead of Brady Quinn, I jumped up and said "we just got Brady Quinn or we are about to make a big trade."

Of course the Cowboys were caught between a rock and a hard place. Could you imagine the stir that taking Quinn would have created? Imagine the quarterback controversy this would have created!

Believe me when I say the Cowboys made the right call by trading their 1st Round Pick (#22 overall) to Cleveland for the Brown's 2nd Round Pick (#36 overall) and their 1st Round Pick in 2008!

Truth be told, there is no real difference between picking #22 and #36 in the NFL Draft. Now the Cowboys can now use the extra second round pick to fill a hole or add depth to another position.

Regardless, having two 1st Round Picks in next year's draft is huge and will pay big dividends for the Boys down the road!

This was an absolute steal for the Cowboys and let me just say, way to go for the Silver and Blue!

UPDATE:

Right as I was about to post this bulletin the Cowboys just traded to get back into the 1st Round! Wow!

They just made a trade with the Eagles (ugh) for the #26 selection and took Defensive End Anthony Spencer of Purdue! This guy is a fierce tackler with explosive speed and a ferocious hitter. You can pencil him in fro starting along side DeMarcus Ware!

Here is the net result of both trades...
We trade a #22 overall plus a third and a fifth round pick for #26 overall (Anthony Spencer) and a 1st Round Pick in 2008!

How Bout' Them Cowboys!
